Portland State of Mind: PIANO-RAMA

Saturday, October 19, 2013 - 4:00pm to Saturday, October 19, 2013 - 5:00pm

WHAT: Piano RAMA

WHEN: Saturday, October 19, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: PSU Lincoln Recital Hall, Room 75, 1620 SW Park Ave., Portland, OR 97201

In the days of Scott Joplin there was a piano tradition called the "cutting contest." If you were looking for an all-out, no-holds barred, bare-knucle exhibition of keyboard wizardry, this is where you wanted to be. From turn of the century ragtime down through boogie-woogie, to 1930's Harlem Stride, wherever the 88's reigned supreme, players would come gather to spur each other on to greater heights, and maybe crown a new heir to the throne.

The mano a mano keyboard duels were part performance, part theater, part friendly competition. Over the years they became the stuff of legend. It is in this illustrious jazz tradition, PSU Professor of Jazz Studies Darrell Grant will introduce PIANO-RAMA, which Grant describes as "Two grands, eight hands, one hour of jazz keyboard fireworks." The debut PIANO-RAMA event "UJPT (Ultimate Jazz Piano Throwdown) will be a special Portland State University edition.

Grant will be joined by fellow PSU jazz faculty Ez Weiss, award-winning pianist/composer Gordon Lee, and rising star Matt Tabor, both PSU alumni. With special features like "Double Barreled Bues Battle,"Iron Chef Medley," and "Solo Showcase", plus celebrity judges, audience voting, and more. This is jazz piano like you've never seen it.

COST: Free and open to the public

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend today, I'm stuck at work. But I guess that's why the boss keeps saying that someday I will start making the big bucks.

Dear Patrons, I will be out of town for a needed retreat, but if plan changed I will be there with all of ou.

Patrons that are attending, although I may not be there to host and greet you at this event, plan meet each other inside the Lincoln Hall by
3:35 - 3:45 pm on top of the stairs in front of the ticket window. This will be an open seating.

Suzie and Carolyn: Both of you meet at Celebration of Life, Opera concert with Jennifer Forni. Suzie was the kind donor of the two original paintings.

Since I'm in the PSU School of Music fundraising committee, Portland Patron of the Arts will be involve in the sponsor and planning of the events.

    Enjoy this beautiful week!

Thank you for your patronage of the Arts!

This sounds like fun! Brad and I don't know many members of this group, but we'll look for faces that are on the "yes" RSVP list.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
