The City of Manhattan will be holding a Bicycle Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, July 20th. This event is FREE and riders of all ages and levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be two different scavenger hunts: one for families (must include child 12 or under) and one for teams of 2-3 people. The scavenger hunt for families is designed specifically with children in mind—photo clues that children will be able to help find and within a small, low-traffic radius that parents can feel comfortable having their children ride in. The scavenger hunt for individual teams (2-3 people) will have more challenging photo clues and will be within a wider radius. Riders will have the flexibility to make the scavenger hunt as challenging (or easy!) as they want.
How it Works:
At the beginning, riders will form teams of 2-3 (if they haven’t already done so) and will be given a packet of picture clues and a “bike manhattan” map (of the city and campus). They will then have 5 minutes to strategize with their team and will then be briefed on rider safety and traffic laws.
The challenge is to find as many clues as possible within the allotted time frame (2 hours), without breaking any traffic laws. There will be “secret police” that will deduct points from anyone caught riding illegally. Points will also be deducted for teams who arrive after the allotted time frame. Secret Police will be disguised as other riders and will be casually riding around watching to ensure that people are demonstrating good riding practices. Ideally, we will have one person in each area (city park/aggieville, downtown, linear crossings, campus, north area) riding around.
Teams will follow photo clues to different landmarks and locations. They will then take a picture at each landmark or location and upload it to Twitter or Instagram and tag it with #bikemhk + #teamname. If you are unable to do this, please email the photos to [masked] as soon as the scavenger hunt is over (or as soon as you finish). Each photo taken is worth 1 point each; be creative! The challenge location intended for intermediate-advanced bikers and is worth 5 bonus points.
At the end, riders will meet at the starting location for a BBQ and awards ceremony.
