Princeton Bluegrass Jam Message Board › Gibson Company Under Seige
Highland Park, NJ
The Gibson Guitar Company is being seiged by the Interior Department (Fish and Wildlife) and Department of Justice after the Federal goverment has seized Ebony and Rosewood from India. India has a law in which if the wood is grown and lumbered in India, it has to be finished by Indian workers. The wood that was confiscated was certified by the Indian government to be legal and finished before imported to the US. The government confiscated about $1 million in value. The following is a youtube.
Please review it and write or email your congressman or congresswoman. Please forward this to your friends and fellow musicians.
There are other companies who have bought wood from India. India is a major source of Rosewood and Ebony in the country. The CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, says he receives Certificateswith each shipment of wood. The government is claiming to enforce the Lacey Act in 2009, which allows the government to enforce the laws of other countries. The law has implicatons to people who have Gibson guitars and instruments made of Indian wood. Theorecally, it would be illegal for the owner or a shop to sell that guitar.
Gibson is a great instrument company an institution. It would be sad to see the government win this.
