What We Do

We simplify the disaster relief process by creating a centralized location for posting and finding disaster relief information.

Simplified Processes

Leveraging new ways to better organize information simplifies otherwise complex disaster relief processes, empowering existing disaster relief organizations to be more effective as well as enabling new actors to efficiently contribute needed resources.

Resource Matching

We are creating a unified place for all resource offers and requests. A resource is anything from food to housing, transportation, medical aid, money, or time. If a user doesn't find a match, they can post their own resource offer or request and be notified when a match is available.

Universal Access

People use Sparkrelief through a website, tablet app, mobile app, or mobile website. When users are without a computer, they simply call, text, or email and volunteer coordinators respond immediately with the information the user needs. Maybe one day we will use ham radios and smoke signals too.

NickelBus is creating a revolution in the inter-city bus travel industry. We are a web-based service that compares thousands of routes and prices to provide users with inter-city bus travel solutions between any two points in the nation. Consider our company to be like the Kayak, Priceline, or Expedia for busses. Choose your destination, and NickelBus will show you a cost-effective way to get there and allow you to book your trip with ease. Founders Nick and Ralph are bus-travel enthusiasts and recent graduates from Stevens Institute of Technology, located in Hoboken, NJ. Each has a track record of perseverance in various positions and projects, including website design, programming, app design, and software algorithms for an electric car. They have many hours of work experience together, and they are excited to be building NickelBus, Inc.

Essay Safe:

EssaySafe allows students to take exams on their own laptops without being able to cheat. As undergraduate juniors from UPenn & Penn State, we just aren't used to writing things by hand anymore - it's slow, messy, inconvenient, and sometimes physically painful. Professors and TAs are even more frustrated with this outdated mode of exams - we've spoken with numerous professors who have become so fed up with our handwriting that they've been forced to alter their curriculums in a manner that replaces in-class exams with take-home ones, making cheating prevention even more difficult.

EssaySafe addresses these issues with two core innovations:

The first is our integration of the already widely-used Google Docs user interface, which minimizes behavioral change barriers related to technology adoption.

The second is our proprietary cheating prevention system, which records screenshots throughout the exam and notifies professors upon detection of suspicious cheating activities.

Our very own Chris Boraski just launched a game app called Chatty Addie in time for the xmas spree If you have an iPhone, time to drop $2.99 and give this app a spin. It's a good way to support a local developer and someone who has put in a lot of work organizing the local community.

Leave a review. If the app gets enough ratings/reviews in the first few days, he'll be far more visible than otherwise.

Chris-- per your request I deleted my Tweet about it, but I think you should reconsider. Get the word out today when parents are feeling generous! Just my two cents.

In general, yes there is an advantage to concentrating buzz on launch, but I want to gather some user feedback and adjust it if needed. If all goes well I should be ready for full publicity in January so it will still be almost new. Thanks and have a great holiday everybody!

My first Meetup last night and had a great time. I'm an attorney focusing on trademark and copyright and am glad to get together with anyone to discuss those issues.

Can someone volunteer to be the host for google hangout? With your own laptop+camera? We can try this out tonight or the next event.

    December 19, 2012

    • Khürt W.

I'm experimenting with Google hangout via a Sony HD camcorder piped to a MacBook. Let me see how that goes. Maybe we'll do it on the next Meetup.

It was great meeting everyone yesterday! Great pitches from Eli @Sparkrelief and Nick @NickelBus, and thanks for the kind words about despite the technical difficulties...

We're currently looking for help in the following areas:
    1) Legal - a reliable firm to work closely with for general startup documents, IP, and future term sheets with VCs
    2) Accounting - tried this on my own with my first startup and it was a disaster
    3) IT Contacts from academia & corporate who deal with testing - trying to connect with as many people as possible to better understand how to provide the best product & service

If you or someone else you know might be able to help, please shoot me an email at [masked] and connect with me on If there's anything I can do to help any one of you, please let me know as well! Thanks and Happy Holidays,

I forgot to add last night that....Hack Jersey will host the first hackathon in the state to invite journalists and coders to work together, competing to build innovative projects that can transform the way we use data and experience news in the Garden State. Visit for more info.

We're in the process of launching another start-up with a great business model and market. Think gamification enabled ad tech company! We're building our team as we speak. If you're interested in joining an early stage start-up and have good web programming / mobile app development skills, let me know. I will be at the meeting.

Sounds interesting. I'd like to talk.

Thanks for the input Michael. I konw that f2f is always ideal, but there is a considerable shortage of developers. I've started 3 internet companies and had my development team in different offices, so it's doable. But of course it depends on what product is being developed, etc. HOpe to see you at the next Meetup.

This is a really good article describing how the community can help support the startup ecosystem. Even if your not involved in a startup, there are ways you can help.

btw, if anyone is looking for a good technology / design read for the holidays and into 2013, try "Trillions". More specifically, Chapter 6 alone would be a bargain at twice the price.
