Planning a Successful Product Launch - Pavita Howe – Principal, Plan B Strategic Marketing

As entrepreneurs, we are passionate about our products and spend much of our time focused on product development. However, the ultimate goal for startups is to win over customers and build a successful business. That’s where marketing and launch planning come in. Launching a new product is much more than just a single event. It’s a process that begins long before the product is ready to launch – and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With the right approach, you can plan a successful product launch that will build brand awareness, attract new customers, and help to grow your business.

Pavita is a marketing consultant at Plan B Strategic Marketing ( She works with startups and entrepreneurs to develop business plans, new product launches, and creative marketing strategies at each stage of their business. She is also a marketing mentor for TechLaunch (, New Jersey’s first technology accelerator program, and an advisor for the Own It Ventures Conference ( in New York. With a broad career of managing significant product marketing strategies and launches for both large companies and startups, Pavita understands both the excitement and the marketing challenges for entrepreneurs with great ideas and limited budgets.

How much does it cost for a startup to file patent through a lawyer? And what are the options ? Is self-filing a provisional good idea or can be harmful? Please drop me an e-mail at [masked] if you have some info/advice on this.

Hi Vishal, I used to work at PTO as patent examiner and have filed a few patents for different startup I worked at. In my experience the total process costs between $5K(simple)-$25K (complex) using lawyers for only filing in the US. There are other costs like search and response back to PTO and other fees. The total process is outlined below.

A video with the slides presented and the audio of the speakers is available on YouTube here: - This video is what we streamed during the event. It was fairly easy to do, and we will probably do it again for future meetups. Please leave any feedback you have about this. Thanks!

To clarify my question about marketing and budget: (1) Marketing is an investment. It has ROI. Fancy startup-esque office furniture probably less so. (2) Much like everything else, results out are a function of resources in. Do some objective benchmarking to estimate the resources necessary to realize your expectations. (2.5) Over time you can lower your cost of acquisition, just be mindful you have to kiss a lot of frog to optimize. All that kissing burns. (3) Social media is not free. It takes time to cut though the noise. We all agree about what they say about time and money ;) (4) There are exceptions to every rule. Hockey sticks such as YouTube, Instagram and the like are part of an elite group of exceptions. If you're betting on getting something for nothing then that's not being an entrepreneur. (5) Marketing's role is not put lipstick on a (product) pig. Sure, you can take time from developing your product and put your own time into marketing but then what is opportunity cost?

Anybody who is going to the meeting up for trying G+ broadcast (again)? I have new, severe mid and lower spine problems since late-November, now awaiting surgery. Sitting up for the public meeting isn't really possible for me right now but I'd love to try the feeling of 'being there'! It's my understanding that a hangout on-air allows the best number of people to attend. I'd be happy to help test before the actual meeting, if anyone wants to try the broadcast.

I'm asking for help from this community because I think you'll appreciate what challenges this developer is facing.

He is trying to get a kickstarter project funded to create a diabetes app. While there are quite a few apps in the iOS App Store most are terribly done. As a person with type 1 diabetes I have tried quite a few of these apps and I have found them quite lacking. Nial is hoping to change that.

He needs funding to bring his vision of a well designed easy to use FREE diabetes app to reality. It's his way of contributing to the world.

    Please help.

We are working on a new start up to help consumers connect with local businesses. If you have a few mins please check out the idea. If you like the idea, click on "endorse the idea". When the site asks to complete a profile, just hit skip. Remember to endorse after logging in, takes less than a minute. If the idea gets the most votes, we will be invited to join a program to help fully build out the idea. Thanks for your time,

Hi everyone, sorry we are behind on finalizing our schedule this time around. We will have a few speakers and it won't be a hack night. We will have a finalized agenda tomorrow and we'll send it out. Thanks!

I thought this was pretty interesting: and could (probably) be adapted to just about any type of project. Tho' I do wish they adapted their process for online (as opposed to meeting in person).
