July ProductTank

ProductTank July is all about making tradeoff decisions in product management. This time Marc Abraham has cooked up something slightly different: there will be two great speakers and a mock debate on making trade-offs by two other great presenters.

We are back in the heart of Shoreditch, at Central Foundation Boy's School on Cowper Street. Right next to Old Street tube station.

Speakers

Harry Jones | Co-Founder & CPO at Top10.com

Harry will talk about "focus" and use some real life case studies to explain how he goes about making tough product decisions. Based on his experience building several successful startups he will outline the strategies he uses to prioritise product features and markets to concentrate on.

Azmat Yusuf | Founder & CEO at Citymapper

Azmat will talk about "the things you don''t do" and will focus on how to best divide your product focus between current and future projects. Azmat will explore some of the factors that play a role in deciding which problems are worth solving.

Nico Perez | Co-Founder at Mixcloud

Nico will take part in a mock debate on a real life tradeoff scenario. As a co-founder of a successful startup, Nico has had to make a number of tough tradeoff decisions. He'll use his lessons learned to argue his approach to the tradeoff.

James Henson | Product Director at Moonpig.com

James will take part in a mock debate on a real life tradeoff scenario. He will use his experience in dealing with difficult product decisions and resource constraints to make a compelling case for his approach to the tradeoff.

Registration will start at 6:30pm, with the first presenter beginning at 7:30pm.

Finally we will have the usual networking over drinks before we repair to a nearby pub for more drinks around 9:30pm!

Interesting as always, but it would have been great to have a mix of start-ups and established companies to see the differences in trade-off processes between the 2.

Are you going to post the slides up here?

Informative presentations. The debate could have benefited from a real life(ish) scenario, why the benefits of responsive design was not discussed? This would have accommodated both desktop and mobile needs! HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript they do magic!

    July 24, 2013

  • Juliane B.

Good presentations. The debate was also interesting, but If I could give one suggestion for the next one, it would be to use real companies for the case study so that the debaters would have real understanding of the business and would be able to answer questions such as "What is 'Tables and Chairs' value proposition?". It would be really cool to see two real competitors debating, for example.

It was my first meetup, and I look forward to attending many more. Some really insightful perspectives from the speakers and debaters. Thanks for organising a great Product Tank.

  • Sameer P.

Great insights, some of my own thoughts validated by hearing the speakers, and I took away some new learnings too.
The mobile vs Desktop debate was interesting, but would have been great to have the opportunity to ask more questions before voting on priorities. For example, what was the context of the mobile users to date, whats the growth opportunity for desktop customers and is there evidence that same customers are using both mobile and desktop in their journey?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
