Adaptive paddling -- kayakers wanted

If you enjoy kayaking and you would like to give something back to help our wounded and disabled veterans, Team River Runner could use your help. Bring your kayak to the beach on the south side of Lannon Quarry and serve as a safety boater to assist adaptive paddlers as they enjoy time on the water. Or if you know of a disabled veteran who might be interested in participating in Team River Runner events, please share this information with them. More information about TRR and the Milwaukee chapter is at www.teamriverrunner.org

Ken, we had a family emergency this morning which prevented me from attending... I hope it went well. Beautiful day. Please post the next outing for TRR. Thanks, J

Part 3: If you're not a kayaker and not able to help lift/transfer veterans from wheelchairs into kayaks, etc., you are still welcome to help. We need one or two greeters for the event to make sure everyone is welcomed and no one is overlooked. Some of the veterans are planning to arrive by car, and there may be some who have not yet participated in a TRR event and are there just to see what it's all about. We don't want them to go away thinking we are an unfriendly bunch!

Part 2: If you are not a kayaker but still want to help, we need you too. A few of the vets may need assistance getting in and out of their kayaks, and off and on the VA Hospital bus. Physical therapists from the VA will be there Saturday, but extra hands are always welcome. The VA will be providing lunch of Subway sandwiches. I plan to arrive by 10:30 a.m. The veterans are scheduled to arrive around 11 a.m. We should be done by 3 p.m. Please be aware that there is a $4/person fee to enter the county park, or a carload fee of $20.

Part 1: Thank you to everyone who has indicated you can help. Latest word is that we will have from 9 to 13 veterans attending the event, so it will be good to have your help. To answer the question about what to expect -- Our main need is to have kayakers on the water while our veterans are paddling. If you are trained in kayak assisted-rescue techniques, great. If not, no problem. There will be several of us who are able to get veterans back into their boats or deal with other safety situations that may arise. However, it would be good if every kayak volunteer on the water has a whistle so you can call attention to any problems. Last year we had only one unintentional capsize and that was by an able-bodied veteran who was testing his limits a bit. If you have an extra kayak, PDF and paddle that a veteran might use, please bring it along. We are bringing extra kayaks and gear but it won't hurt to have a variety of boats.

I will attend and assist with the event. Could you send me some information regarding the event and how I will be assisting?

Depending on the weather, we should be there until 2:30 or 3.

As a veteran and a paddler, I'd really love to . . . but will be out of town. But don't count us solo canoers out of your announcement now!

Wish I could do this, but I am working that day. I am looking forward to paddling with the group soon.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
