Manage your fear of speaking and presenting in public
This is a one-day workshop for those who experience fear and anxiety at the prospect of speaking or presenting to an audience.
You will benefit from this workshop if you:
• Are an inexperienced speaker
• Avoid occasions where you might have to speak in front of others
• Experience physical symptoms such as blushing, racing heart-beat or sweating at the prospect of speaking
• Panic at thought of giving presentations Cannot focus on your message because you are overly self-conscious
• Realise that your fear of speaking and presenting in public prevents you advancing your career
What to expect
At our workshop you will have the opportunity to discuss your fears in a supportive setting.
You will be introduced to research findings from psychology related to fear of public speaking. This will enable you to put your fears into perspective.
You will also be introduced to several self-help techniques, derived from both Western psychology and Eastern traditions, known to help people focus and
reduce anxiety.
You will practice delivering a number of speaking assignments before a small audience.
You will receive feedback and suggestions on how to improve your performances.
You will record your final speech to enable you to self-evaluate in your own time and to further improve your skills.
Outcome
At the end of the workshop the you should:
Feel more confident about speaking in front of an audience
Be familiar with a number of simple strategies you can use to manage your fear
Understand that some nervousness is beneficial and can help your performance
Have faced your fears by speaking several times
before an audience
What makes our workshop different?
In our workshop we do not make extravagant promises about permanently conquering, curing or eliminating your fear, but instead we will help you understand your fear and to present you with a range of strategies you can use to manage it so that your fear and anxiety does notprevent you pursuing your goals.
You will have the opportunity to try several of the most effective scientifically tested strategies to see what works best for you.
The methods you choose will depend on your particular situation, the symptoms of fear that you experience, and how much time you have to prepare before your big event.
There is no ‘one-method-fits-all- people-in-all-situations’ solution to the problem of anxiety about speaking or presenting in public. But instead, you will almost certainly find that you can manage your fear by using one or a combination of the techniques you try out at the workshop. You will be encouraged to experiment and discover what works best for you.
The strategies we present are based on sound scientific trials published in respected peer-reviewed academic journals, rather than myths and old-wives-tales that have been passed around for years but never actually tested scientifically to see if they work.
The workshop has been trial-run with positive results by researchers at the University of Surrey.
