Beginner Workshop - Getting started with IPython Notebook

Join us for our first Beginner Workshop!

Who's invited?

This event is intended for anyone who identifies as female. We have room for 10 beginner attendees, and 5 event hosts to run this workshop. If you would like to help host this event by being available to answer questions one on one, please let us know when you RSVP.

What will we be doing?

This is a very hands on workshop, so bring your laptop!!!

We reserved the Board Room at the Roseville Public Library to hold a beginner's workshop to get started in python data analysis. This is a great opportunity to dive in for any beginners interested in learning python, with the opportunity of getting involved with our Web Scraping project, if you choose so!

The break down for the sessions is explained below. If you are not familiar with the materials, we encourage you to attend all sessions. If you are familiar with some of the materials but are interested in only some of the sessions, feel free to show up for that session; we only ask that you join during one of the breaks. We, of course, welcome extra help if you are familiar with the materials and are willing to help beginners.

Whether you are beginner, intermediate, or advanced, or if you are willing to participate in helping, please let us know in your response so that we can better prepare for the event.

What is the tentative schedule?

6pm-6:30pm - Social - meet and greet, discuss what aspects of python we are are interested in.

6:30-7pm - Workshop begins! Installing Anaconda - We will walk you through installing anaconda on your laptop. Anaconda is a distribution of python which includes all the packages you would ever want to do data analysis. It's great for beginners because it's a no hassle install, and it includes the ipython notebooks, which are very beginner friendly to start coding in.

7pm-7:15pm - Break

7:15pm - Tour of Ipython Notebooks & What is a "function"? We will write some small silly functions together, and give you a chance to write a small function of your own.

8pm-8:15pm - Break

8:15pm-8:45pm - What is a python "module"? We will teach you what a module is, why they are very helpful, and give you a brief introduction to the purposes of some useful python modules for data analysis - numpy, pandas and matplotlib. If you are interested, we will send you a follow up email with resources to learn more about these modules.

8:45pm-9pm - Closing Feedback - We hope you will give us feedback on which part was the most fun, and how we can improve for our next workshop.
