QS-Aug

Details
The Fourth Tuesday in August is also National Dog Day. I am not sure of the connection yet, but we'll hold QS-Aug at START on the 26th of August, 2014.
I went to a MeetUp about Google Wearables - wrist devices that work with your phone currently displaying notifications- those things that pop up (unpredictably?) on the top of my phone. They are like a big watch with small screen with some touch capability that challenges input with some interesting twists. Most are not actually on the market yet.
I also attended the IoT Meetup organized by Gaurav Khandelwal, CEO of ChaiOne at ChaiOne offices in the Galleria area. This was the first and it is focused on the industrial aspects of things like QS- devices measuring things in the oil and gas fields, acting on data, communicating somehow to gather data for company purposes. Many of the elements are similar to QS and what I call QH - the Quantified Home. About 30 folks, of highly varied backgrounds showed up.
I also attended a Nodebot Saturday at the HackerSpace - TxRxlabs, down in the neighborhood of START. Amanda Shih organized. I took my arduino kit and my RaspberryPi kit which I had not given myself permission to dive into because I knew I would spend a lot of time on it. It was fun and Amanda had piles of parts to play with- I got started with both, successfully in the next week. I am working on (thinking about) using them to monitor my brand new airconditioning system in my old Houston house. Also I have a circulating hot water pump I want to control instead of leaving the pump running all the time.
See you Tuesday at START. Use the north door, not the main one. Knock if its locked. Call me if problems. Dial 91 21 last, after 254 and 713 first. Wine, cheese and crackers at 630pm.
