Thanks in part to Dom Colgan's post on the subject, I watched and cam fully recommend the BBC Horizon documentary on Big Bang Cosmology. It covers some interesting topics raised as questions in a few meetups we have had, notably -
1) Inflation, a mechanism by which the just-born Universe is thought to have expanded in a very large and rapid but short-lived manner.
2) Dark Matter - unseen matter, invisible to us that makes up the majority of matter in the universe and has an effect on the formation of the structure of the universe.
3) Dark Energy - a proposed type of energy (or more strictly a negative pressure) contained in empty space used to explain how the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate.
4) Dark Flow - a very recently discovered phenomenon, not yet verified by other cosmological studies, suggesting galactic clusters are moving in a certain net direction, and that this may have causes from outside our visible universe.
