Panel Discussion - The R and Science of Predictive Analytics: Four Case Studies in R

We'll begin with an overview of prediction methods in R, and each of the panelists will discuss a case study of how R is used within their organizations.
We'll follow with a question and answer session for the panelists.
For existing R users, we hope this panel will show how R is being used for real world problems. For analysts who may not be familiar with R, we hope to illustrate R's features and demonstrate its value as a business tool.

I cannot remember how I first heard about this site, and if it was through this group, my apologies for re-posting. But I thought this was right up the alley of a bunch of folks who love looking at data:
The US gov't is, in theory, pushing for more "open gov't" and therefore sharing more datasets with us peons. So far they seem small & boring, but it's a start. Check out:

Carlo Cosenzaoverall, good presentation. it would be nice if a future meeting were geared towards people that were already familiar with R. it seems unnecessary to preach the use of R to a crowd of intermediate/advanced users... the users outnumbered the novices. but I did grab some useful snippets. thank you.
I was flummoxed by a recurring theme: "the steep learning curve of R." as opposed to what? I'd really like to know the baseline for this comparison. SAS? C? Java? PERL?

Mike Williamson+1 guestIt is great to see this sort of face to face user forum, where more fluid, 2-way communication can happen. But it felt as if the speakers weren't exactly sure what was expected of them or what they should have prepared.

Nicholas Lewin-KohCo-chair, Co-OrganizerThe networking opportunities were not bad, it was interesting to meet people from much different industries than mine, and here what kinds of problems they worked on. The panelists were really mixed, their presentations were not well prepared, and did not address the topic well. To make sure this group continues and brings any value, it is essential to have good quality speakers, with interesting, substantive topics. Please pay more attention to quality and content.
