For our next meetup we'll have some fun with Mike Driscoll (fellow Data and R Geek, organizer of the Bay Area R meetup group, CTO of MetaMarkets (http://www.metamarkets.com), O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com) Strata/OSCON speaker, and author of the "The Three Sexy Skills of Data Geeks" (http://www.dataspora.com/2009/05/sexy-data-geeks/) blog post) while he talks about the validation of Bill James’ sabermetrics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabermetrics) approach to batting performance using 30 years of Major League Baseball statistics, and a derived predictor for batters’ salaries using R (http://www.r-project.org/).
He will highlight R’s functional programming features, its compact syntax for statistical modeling, and its ease of connectivity with persistent data stores. This talk will emphasize techniques and approach over detail.

About Mike
Mike has spent the last decade building data platforms across life sciences, retail, and media firms. He worked as a software engineer for the Human Genome Project, later founded the online retailer CustomInk.com. and most recently founded & led the analytics firm Dataspora, where he remains Chairman. Michael holds an A.B. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from Boston University.
