Nikon School 2013 - Session ONE

Again this year, Royal Oak Photography is being sponsored by Nikon. This is the fourth year that we have been sponsored by Nikon for this event, and as usual, Nikon is being incredibly generous to ROP. This year, I will be giving away TWO seats to this Nikon School's Session One. Two. To enter to win, post a comment to this thread, and tell us what camera you shoot, and why YOU deserve to go to Nikon School this year. Each seat is worth $149. The winner will be selected no later than Wednesday February 20th - so don't delay! Tell us WHY you deserve this free ticket!

Who should attend:

Folks who haven't been able to translate creativity into good photographs, and those who'd like to make better pictures but don't think they're creative. Better photos can be made; we're going to show you how to make them!

What to expect:

We know you'll be pleasantly surprised by what we can teach you. Yes, you'll get the technical photography basics you need to relax with a camera, but also the creative inspiration and photography training to raise your level. (We hide a lot of the tech talk in the creative fun part.)

Topics Will Include

  • Composition: where things should go in the frame and how to put them there

  • People: candids and formals; people at work and at ease

  • Travel: the great scenics; foregrounds and backgrounds; details

  • Life events: birthdays, celebrations, parties, picnics.

  • And, in these classic themes, we're also going to be teaching you all about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, resolution, flash and autofocus, as well as how to size, sort, save and share your snaps.

Joel, thanks for being there to help educate us (and make some of us want to spend all kinds of $$$$$!!! :-) The instructors were fantastic - energetic, personable, knowledgeable. I learned a ton and am motivated to get out and shoot - the best way to learn and improve! Thanks again, Amy, for sharing this event with us.

I bought a D7000 last June after owning a Pentax K110D for many years. And I went all out -[masked] lens, 60mm macro lens, new bag - the works. But there's been some serious frustration since the purchase and I'd love some deeper insight into working with the Nikon (various focus options especially). I'm also taking a 2-week trip to Ireland in May (first time out of the US!) and would really love to get some Nikon-specific technical training AND creative tips to make my trip and local shoots more successful! I'm going to attend this event no matter what, but being able to use that $149 toward my trip instead of on this workshop would be fantastic!!

I shoot with a Nikon D7000. I am just learning all about this camera and want to gain further knowledge and expert advice on how to use the camera for some excellent shots. I have been out taking shots in nature, car shows, snow scenes, ice sculptures, sun rise and sun sets etc etc etc. Meeting new people and learning new techniques. For me this has opened new doors to meeting some wonderful people and really helped with my basic skill set. I am striving to increase my photos to the next level where I can give them as gifts etc. As a single mom it would mean so much to me. There is so much to learn out there and with limited resources it is a struggle at times. I find walks in the park just a great release to shoot away! IF I can walk away with one more piece of knowledge every time I meet up with a group or talk to someone I am thrilled. Thank you so much for the opportunity these meet- ups offer. Best of luck to the winner.

I deserve to win a ticket to this Nikon sponsored event, because I strive to continuously improve my craft with the understanding that I not only represent myself, but I represent the brand that I use. Nikon is what I’ve grown up with when it comes to cameras. Every little boy wants to be like his Dad, and growing up watching my dad shoot with his Nikon F3’s….it was inevitable that I’d have a Nikon of my own. I always jumped at the chance to go out shooting with my dad, and when he finally let me shoot with one of his F3’s I was sooooo excited. Some of my best outings were shooting buildings and trains around the Detroit area. As I fast forward to the present, I decided to go with Nikon digital so I could still use the manual lenses my dad has. I started off with a D90 and moved up to a D700. I have had nothing but good results with my Nikon cameras and glass!

Wow! What a great opportunity! I'd LOVE to go to this class!
Why should I get one of the tickets? I'm a life-long learnier and committed to learning how to create more compelling photos for the Detroit Urban Debate League, a non-profit organization that reinstates debate programs in inner-city Detroit. I've worked for non-profit youth organizations for 15 years, and so have to be frugal and consistently find ways to get the biggest bang for my buck. Having the opportunity to attend this class for free would be a great help! I end up doing most of the marketing, photography, and publications myself. I think attending this class this could help me be a better photographer and create more compelling photos for our organization. I've been saving my pennies, and I'm ready to upgrade my camera. Currently, I shoot with a Canon Rebel T2i.

I have a D300 with a lot of features that I know I'm not using to full advantage. I'd love to learn from the pros! If I win a ticket to this one, maybe I could afford the Marionette shoot. And, my birthday is March 1 - it would be a great gift (and, guys, I'm not getting any younger!)

I shoot with a Nikon D60. I find myself in a creative rut. I feel this Nikon School can pull me from my doldrums, and get me shooting again. I don't think the camera makes the photographer. It's what one does with the camera that makes the photographer.

    Hi There,
I shoot with a Nikon D90. I think that I deserve to win because I am a very giving person except when it comes to myself. I spent 21 years in the Army giving to my country, over 20 years as a Mom giving to my kids and my husband, and it might be time to give something to myself. What better gift to give or receive than knowledge! Thank you either way for the opportunity to try to win, how fun!

With the D700 and D800E that I shoot with, I sometimes wonder how the guys who publish photographs in publications such as National Geographic get such dynamic contrasts and vivid colors, I understand much has to do with the subject matter being captured, but this is not always the case, I guess for me, I would love to gain a full understanding of the numerous changes and variations of camera settings and how they react on image output.

I would love to attend the classes and deserve to have some fun. I've been working huge hours and my passion for photography has been on the back burner. This would be just the thing to re-energize me to get out and start shooting again!!! I shoot with a Nikon 3100 and I love it .... I just wish I had the knowledge to do it justice!

I would love to win a ticket to this event! I have shot with Nikons for over 30 years. I have a Nikon D3100. I have only created images with a digital camera for four years. I am still a beginner in this medium and I need lots of instruction to to gain more confidence. Nikon's School would be the best place to help me to gain better skills, imagination, creativity and spark my Muse. This would be a wonderful experience!

I shoot with a D5000, usually with a fixed 35mm lens, but sometimes with a[masked]mm. I have a 10-month-old baby; sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on really capturing her first year, messing around with settings - usually I just resort to taking mediocre pictures with my phone. Her first birthday's coming up, and I would love to have the skills to get every iota of frosting on her face on "film."

I shoot with a Nikon D7000. I would love to win the tickets because I often get in creative ruts. That wasn't the case when I attended Nikon school to learn the fundamentals of photography a few years ago. I was shooting great stuff (imho) but I didn't have the technical stuff down. After learning the basics, I focused on that and "lost" the creative part of what I was doing. Getting tickets to this class would allow things to come full circle and hopefully help me add much needed creativity to the technical skills I've recently gained.
