Solomon is recognized the world over as an exponent and teacher of Lindy Hop, Blues Dancing, and related dance styles of African-American origin (such as the Charleston and Vernacular Jazz). He began teaching dance in 1999, and he has taught dance workshops all over the United States, Canada, the British Isles, Australia, and Asia. His teaching is both passionate and easygoing, both practical and philosophical. Solomon is also a jazz pianist, bandleader, and arranger; he has toured the United States and Japan with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and currently works as a freelance musician based out of Seattle. Be sure to catch the Solomon Dougals Quartet, Saturday night (May 2nd) at the Durham Armory!
Blues by Solomon
(12:00 - 1:20)
This class will present the basics of weight changes and traveling steps in blues dancing. It'll also introduce leading and following for the types of groovy movement that are important to the idiom of Blues dancing, such as the fish-tail. We'll add some steps to your palette that will give you some variety in your dancing while letting you really dig into the rhythmic groove of the music! This will be a challenging class, and although it is open to beginners, advanced dancers who want to attend the rest of the day's workshops will also need to attend this class.
Finding Your Center: Connection is Where It's At
(1:30 - 2:40)
The real thrill of blues dancing comes when you can really focus your energy in your core and be connected with your partner's core. In this class we'll dig in deep: be ready for some intense work!
Cool Moves and Musicality
(2:50 - 4:00)
Blues dancing is about movement, not moves; it's about energy, not steps; it's about music, not choreography. However, blues dancers do have a richness of cool moves up their sleeves, and we'll play with some of them in this class, and ways to fit them into the flow of the music. Some possibilities include turns, lunges, and dips.
$15 for one class
$25 for two classes
$30 for three classes
*Students will receive a $5 discount
