  • Topic: Common Misconceptions

Since this is our first meetup for 2013, I decided to go with a lighter topic (we can get into more serious stuff starting in March).  To kick off meetups for 2013, we'll discuss common misconceptions. That is, things that are commonly believed to be true, but are actually not.

    - "Sushi" means raw fish

    - Swimming less than an hour after eating can cause muscle cramps

    - Objects re-entering the atmosphere from space get hot due to friction

Although many people believe the above statements to be true, they are, in fact, all false.

Okay, so those were fairly easy ones, but it was just an example.  Discussion points:

    • Our own misconceptions and how we came to find out we were mistaken.
    • The impact common misconceptions can have on society and human wellbeing (for example, misconceptions about the meaning of the word "theory" as used in, for example the theory of evolution).
    • Pet peeves: The misconceptions that drive us up the wall every time we hear them
    • Favorite surprising misconceptions:  Bring lists (if you want) of your favorite misconceptions you think may be held by other participants.  Throw some surprising but true facts into the list as well, and everyone else can try to sort out which is which (I've got a few that I think will probably surprise a few folks -- but we're a fairly intelligent bunch, so maybe not -- the surprised me!).  We will have a projector, so if you have fun slides about a given misconception (or want to put your list up on the projector) please send them to me in advance.

Since there are some new folks, we'll also do introductions (probably at the end, unless everyone is on time for a change).

Where: We meet at TOZ Location 1 in Gangnam.  It's an easy walk from Line 2 Gangnam Station, Exit 9.  I'll post detailed directions and a map by Friday, and will send an e-mail with my cell number to everyone who RSVPs yes, just in case you get lost.

When: I've reserved TOZ for two hours.  We meet at 4pm, and wrap up at 6pm.  Whoever wants to can join me for dinner afterwards (please comment and mention if you plan to come to dinner so that I can make reservations if there will be a lot of people, and also mention if you have dietary restrictions).

Fee: 10,000won (possibly discounted to 8,000 depending on actual attendance).  This is to cover the room at TOZ.  Beverages during the meetup are included in the fee.  Dinner is separate.

Cancellation: PLEASE PLEASE let us know in advance if you cancel by changing your RSVP to no.  If you don't show up, and don't let us know in advance, you'll need to wire your fee to me before you can RSVP for a future meetup (sorry for being strict, but we have had a large number of no-shows in the past, and I don't really want to start making people send money in advance).  Letting me know in advance about cancellations lets me adjust the reservations, and keeps costs down for other attendees (nobody really wants to pay 10,000won for the meetup room, right?)

Have a great week and see you on Sunday!

    Original message:

    Hi everyone!

Rational Thinkers has been on a two-month hiatus while I've been too busy to organize anything.  Time to remedy that.

February is a very busy month for me, and I expect to be out of the country a bit, so the only day I can organize something is on Sunday the 17th.  I know that Sunday's aren't convenient for many of our regular attendees, so we will try to get back to the Saturday schedule starting in March.

But let's at least get together in February to kick off Rational Thinkers meetups for the new year.  The topic is still to-be-determined.  I'll announce it in a few days.  However, if anyone is interesting in presenting on a topic, please contact me privately and let me know.

The location is to-be-determined but will probably be at one of the TOZ locations in or near Gangnam. I'll announce more as I work out the details. but please RSVP as early as possible so I know how big a room to reserve.  The fee will probably be 10,000 won per person.  As usual, we will do dinner afterwards.

See you all soon, and (late) happy 2013!

    Cheers,

    Matthew

Yes, very sorry about the cancellation. I had a last-minute overseas business trip come up at the last minute (literally found out less than a day in advance). I'm writing from San Diego at the moment. I've a few more stops to make on this trip, and I'll be back in Seoul at the beginning of March. So I'll reschedule as soon as I can. Thanks very much for your interest in the group, and hope to see you at the next meetup!

Okay, so it looks like the topic is going to be "Common Misconceptions" (I figured we'd keep it relatively light for the first meetup of the year, and leave time for general conversation). I will book the venue this evening or tomorrow morning and post details then. As usual, we'll get dinner after.

    Hi Matthew

Please try to find a more central location as I am moving to Dongducheon soon and it will take more than 2 hours to get to Gangnam. Thanks

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
