Book Discussion - Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld

  • July 25, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Join us in July as we discuss one of this summer's most popular beach reads, Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld. July also means we can sip iced coffee and eat scrumptious Chaibo gelato as we chat about the book! Below is a description of Sisterland from Amazon.

Curtis Sittenfeld, New York Times bestselling author of American Wife and Prep, returns with a mesmerizing novel of family and identity, loyalty and deception, and the delicate line between truth and belief.

From an early age, Kate and her identical twin sister, Violet, knew that they were unlike everyone else. Kate and Vi were born with peculiar “senses”—innate psychic abilities concerning future events and other people’s secrets. Though Vi embraced her visions, Kate did her best to hide them.

Now, years later, their different paths have led them both back to their hometown of St. Louis. Vi has pursued an eccentric career as a psychic medium, while Kate, a devoted wife and mother, has settled down in the suburbs to raise her two young children. But when a minor earthquake hits in the middle of the night, the normal life Kate has always wished for begins to shift. After Vi goes on television to share a premonition that another, more devastating earthquake will soon hit the St. Louis area, Kate is mortified. Equally troubling, however, is her fear that Vi may be right. As the date of the predicted earthquake quickly approaches, Kate is forced to reconcile her fraught relationship with her sister and to face truths about herself she’s long tried to deny.

Funny, haunting, and thought-provoking, Sisterland is a beautifully written novel of the obligation we have toward others, and the responsibility we take for ourselves. With her deep empathy, keen wisdom, and unerring talent for finding the extraordinary moments in our everyday lives, Curtis Sittenfeld is one of the most exceptional voices in literary fiction today.

Ladies, I just want to say I think we have an extraordinary group of women going here. I don't know what other book clubs are like... but tonight's discussion was particularly honest and deep and I personally derive a lot of comfort from you guys, always. I really appreciate how much everyone shares -- about the books and our personal experiences. I love the friendships that are deepening as the years add up, and I am enjoying the new folks who are joining us. Until next month, xoxoxo!

Paysha -- thank you for that. I think we have an extraordinary group of people. It's not just anyone I feel comfortable enough around to talk about my issues with depression, anxiety, and OCD. Not for a moment did I feel judged or like I'd made a mistake by being honest. Book group night is often the highlight of my week. Thank you, ladies, for listening and being such a great group.

I'm going to have to cancel my attendance this evening as something has come up with my family. I'm almost finished with the book and would love to know what the next one will be so that I can attend the next meeting! Have fun ladies!

Still feeling groggy and a little nauseous from my medical procedure this a.m. and have to cancel. I liked "Prep" and "American Wife" better than "Sisterland".

I just got invited on a sunsail sail with a Reggae band so I'll have to skip this one. I wish I could do both!

    Hi Ladies,
I checked in with Chris at Chaibo to see if they are having an open mike night during the same time as next week's meetup. They're not - he said that was a 1-time thing. Chaibo does have a calendar, and he said he would be happy to post our meetups, so I gave him the dates for the last Thursday of the month through September.

Here's Chaibo's calendar - there is an open mike thing scheduled for next Thursday, but Chris said they weren't having it:

I am trying to get a hold of a copy of this book before I leave to go out of town next week. I have not yet been successful b but will keep trying. I do not have time to get a copy from Amazon sine I am leaving on Saturday. I hope to find one, I really want to read it!

The book sounds interesting and I really would like to come, so I am answering yes. However, I have a medical procedure that day and don't know if in fact I will be able to make it.
