Basic CAD w/ SketchUp & 3D Printing Demo

Sorry for the delay since the last event was cancelled, but I'd like to announce an inaugural meet up for the group! You'll notice the group name changed, to reflect an available meeting space at the Redondo Beach library, hence the group is now the 'Redondo Beach Makers!'.

On March 22nd, we'll have our first meetup where we'll hold a class & demonstration on using SketchUp ( - a free 3D Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) tool, and have a 3D Printing Demonstration using a Printrbot Simple ( At the end of the demonstrations, there will be an open Q&A, and we'll talk about the future for the group and take a look at a potential space in the library for future maker use!

We'll be meeting in one of the library conference rooms on the 2nd floor of the library, right up the stairs that are in the lobby. There will be signs pointing you in the right direction.

Any chance of repeating the meeting for those who missed or would like a review?

Excellent. Good information, well presented. Also: congrats on keeping the meeting going despite the many "distractions". Will the slides go out?

Thanks! It was good to see everyone engaged and having a good time. Looking forward to the next event - working on the details still but it should be posted here on Meetup within the next week or so.

Hey Everyone - I posted the slides to the "Files" section of this Meetup group. If you're having trouble finding it, look in the top menu bar under the red banner with the group name, then "More" then under that should be "Files" and you'll see them there. I had to break it into two parts due to limits on file size. Enjoy!!

BTW: Sketchup isn't Google anymore. Since 2012, it's been Trimble (who made their name in navigation systems). "On June 1, 2012, Trimble acquired SketchUp from Google for a price less than $100m" - more details here:

Hey everyone - just a tip I thought I'd mention. If you're bringing your own laptop to follow along, then I recommend bringing a mouse too. It's much easier to CAD with a mouse than a trackpad, but if you don't have a mouse I'll show you how to use the trackpad too with SketchUp.

    See you all this afternoon!

Hey this is pretty cool - thanks for putting it together!

Should I bring a laptop? Or will there be computers there....

If you'd like to follow-along with the lesson, then definitely bring a laptop and install Sketchup beforehand. The free version, called 'Make' is all you'll need (although I think you automatically start with the pro version, but no big deal). I'll go through the super basics, and in the end we'll 3D Print one of the examples I make using the free STL Export Plugin for Sketchup.

One note - charge-up your laptop fully beforehand, as I'm not sure how many outlets there will be in the conference room we'll be using for this meetup. In the future when we meet in the actual maker-space, this should be less of a problem :)
