An instructor with the National Ski Patrol (nsp.org) has offered to put on an Avalanche 1 class for The Reno Hiking Meetup Group. This is a 28 hour course that includes classroom presentations and field work. What we need to know at this point is if there is enough interest in this group for him to set up the class. We need at least 10 people to commit.

Please RSVP if:

• You actually will sign up for this class if it is posted later (note, you are not actually committing to anything at this time – we are trying to find out if there are enough students to organize the class at this time).

• The field work dates will be March 1 and 2, 2014 (these will be in the Donner Pass area).

• There will be three midweek night classes before the field portion that you will need to attend as well (they will either be online, or in Reno).

• The cost per person will be about $190 for the course.

• Each student will also be required to purchase ‘Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain’ by Bruce Tremper.

Here is the course description:

This course teaches students how terrain, weather, and snowpack contribute to avalanche hazards. This knowledge is used during decision-making exercises in the classroom and in the field session. Students also become acquainted with human factors, which skew effective decision making. The course covers movement through avalanche terrain, route selection/hazard identification, and stability assessments in the field environment. Also focuses heavily on the fundamentals of self, group, and organized rescue. Students complete a written exam and practical evaluation during field exercises. Upon course completion, students are qualified to participate in organized rescue operations.
