Title; Mobile First from an Interactive Agency Perspective

Interactive Agencies have been designing traditionally for desktop first, however with opportunities surrounding Responsive Web Design and the growth of mobile, the concept of Mobile First has been become an industry catch-phrase. However, what does this really mean in practice?

  • What does it mean for an interactive agency to get up to speed with the best practices of mobile?
  • What are some of the key areas for them to consider now when building out a holistic property that include mobile done right?
  • What does the philosophy of Mobile first mean for them? Retro-fit mobile first or redesign from the bottom up?
  • How do you design a sign by giving each different view the best for its usage, context and traffic?

Frankly I find most agencies to be the last to embrace new techs and the accompanying unique marketing environments. They usually blame it on their clients (as resistant to change), but I find it's THEM! Look at how many online videos are ruined by 30 second spots-- in a two minute video! Like Hollywood, they feel more comfortable going with something that worked in the past. With the Internet/online/digital, that's a dangerous attitude.

Sorry to say this but I think this was one of the worst meetups for RWD I've been to. Presenter 1 didn't know his audience or much on the topic of mobile first. Presenter 2 was better at presenting but again he didn't stick to the topic. In a nutshell it sounds like his company shies away from RWD because it's not the right solution for most of their clients. Interesting but perhaps not the right presenter for the evening. Speaker 3 - Didn't really get where he was going. I'm glad he does a lot of research on the internet and read books but really, not the point of the meetup....

Kimberly! Thanks for the comment. Yes- it is clear that the mid-tier agencies of NYC that were represented here have a long-way to go with this topic. Interesting fact is that they all represented themselves as agencies that are doing a lot of Responsive development and wanted to present what they have learned.

Very interesting. Clearly, the speakers weren't fully embracing mobile-first as Luke W describes. Enjoyed hearing their take on how mobile-first fits within the agency world.

An interesting meetup by far. Mobile first definitely has its advantage. Smaller screen and slower connection forces simpler design and content. By stripping un-necessary content early on allows content writer, designer and developer to focus on the "meat" - the "main" content - what is critical to the audiences, what sells, what works, what is "a must" on the site From a marketing standpoint I think "mobile first" definitely helps everybody in the team to focus, start out big, strip down, and elaborate based on the essential elements. It was unexpected to hear contrasting opinion - agencies that don't embrace mobile first, but it is a definitely a good way to reflect on why "mobile first" is THE WAY for the future digital development. Be the leader, not follower!

    Let me stoke the flames.

Mobile first. Why? Credit cards are tied to mobile apps in more numbers than mobile web.

Hunter, yes..... This is a discussion from the interactive agency perspective on responsive design. If you think of a reason why an interactive agency that has been doing traditional websites, is now embracing RWD, it is because of mobile and all other screen formats. This discussion is around how they look at mobile first ( and getting mobile right) in this process for an interactive agency that has added mobile to their service offering.

Will this event be video-taped? It would be so nice to view online afterwards... (especially for those who are unable to come).

Sounds good to me. Can't wait to watch the video from tonight either. Lice hearing of challenges others run into when designing responsive stuff so I'm better prepared when I attempt to design mine.

So while people may be bored of hearing me speak, I've been working on a generalized Grid system with Scott Kellum called Singularity (http://singularity.gs/) that mimics the functionality of Gridset App.
I can speak to some of the challenges inherit within fluid grid systems, generalized grid systems, semantic vs class based grids, symmetric vs asymmetric grids, etc… If interested, let me know.
