June Meetup
Hosted by Rhein-Neckar Smart Data Meetup
Details
We're very happy to announce our second meetup which will take place at the University of Mannheim on June 23rd.
We will have two technical talks, one from industry (Springer) and one from academia (Uni Mannheim), followed by informal discussions on any topics relevant to smart data, semantics, data integration, analytics, etc.
Here are the talk details:
- Marcel Karnstedt-Hulpus (http://www.marcel.karnstedt.com), Senior Data Architect at Springer Nature, Heidelberg
Title: "Building a Landscape of Natural Scientific Facts Databases at Springer Nature"
Abstract: In this talk, Marcel will give an overview of Springer Nature's latest efforts regarding their facts-database offerings in natural-scientific domains. The focus will be on the mix of technologies that drive these very recent developments, rather than on the actual product and feature portfolio. Marcel will highlight how smart data plays the central role in a data architecture that combines fit-for-purpose stores with graph data and knowledge networks. While currently driven by concrete database offerings, the talk will also illustrate how the envisioned data architecture supports a growing landscape of interconnected and interrelated knowledge repositories from a range of domains, reaching far beyond the natural-scientific starting point.
- Annalisa Gentile (http://dws.informatik.uni-mannheim.de/en/people/researchers/annalisa/) and Heiko Paulheim (http://dws.informatik.uni-mannheim.de/en/people/professors/dr-heiko-paulheim/), Web Data Mining group at Mannheim University
Title: "Extending RapidMiner with Data Search and Integration Capabilities
Abstract: In the recent years, the number of data sources available poses challenges to the automation of the data integration process. Lots of data, both on the Web and within an organization’s intranet, is already available but the number and diversity of sources makes it increasingly challenging for the user to gain a comprehensive overview of the available data. The goal of our work is to support the iterative extension of data tables, by assisting the user in the process of finding appropriate records for her quest. To this end we propose (i) a data search and integration framework specifically tailored for tables and (ii) an initial Open Source implementation of the framework as a RapidMiner extension. We will demonstrate the usage of the framework with a publicly available table dataset extracted from Wikipedia."
Location details and travel info
The meetup will take place at the university building called A5 (thanks Annalisa for pinpointing (https://goo.gl/maps/DoVsetjog6y) it on the map and also providing pictures of the building). The room is C015 on the ground floor. We'll put up some direction signs on the doors.
If you're traveling by car, keep in mind that the street next to to the building doesn't offer a lot of parking spaces. At least allow for some time to find parking at one of the nearby city parking locations if there're no places there. The location is an easy reach from the main train station (about 15 mins walk or bus Nr. 5 or tram Nr. 1).
