Rime Shedrub Ling is the community of students of Younge Khachab Drodul Rinpoche. Rinpoche has been instructing us in Dzogchen meditation, most recently as understood in relation to the 9 yanas.  He will continue Dzogchen instruction this Spring, using a text by Rabjam Longchenpa, a major figure in the history of Dzogchen. (For more information about Rinpoche and the teachings please see http://www.rsl-ne.com.)

As students we meet regularly to practice together. Starting Sunday, January 22, we will offer a beginning guided meditation session on alternate Sunday mornings, 11-12:30 to discuss and practice basic meditation techniques, especially shamatha or calm-abiding. These are free and open to the public. On alternate Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30, (starting Jan 4) we will hold meditation sessions followed by chod practice, open to those students whom Rinpoche has introduced to the practice.

The Buddha’s final words to his disciples were:  "All things pass away. Work out your own liberation with diligence."

It is possible for human beings to achieve, by their own intention and effort, complete liberation from suffering. We know this by the example of the Buddha, and others who have followed his path. It is up to each of us to decide whether this is our own path is well.

The Buddha’s words were spoken to and heard by individual people, not ‘people in general.’ As a result, there are many ways to approach and engage the path – some very gradual, some very quick, some more complex, some more simple. In all of them the quality of one’s meditation is at the heart.

Meditation is sometimes less mysterious than we think. We all have a meditation – it is whatever we happen to devote our hearts and minds to. The question, then, is not whether to meditate but how. What is the basis of good meditation?

Meditation practice can have many goals, even physical, such as lowering blood pressure. The meditation taught by the Buddha is undertaken with the goal of completely liberating oneself and all sentient beings from suffering.  This intention is perfectly natural; it reflects our primordial nature – the Buddha was not interested in anything artificial or contrived. However the vastness of this endeavor will quickly make it obvious that we need a guide, our own teacher.

There is a lot to do; it’s best to start now! We cannot make the best use of the brilliant instruction that Rinpoche has given us, if we give in to self-doubt, or our minds remain restless, narrow and unsettled. We won’t learn and accomplish until we try!
