Photograph the Carrie Furnace

We have arranged to be the FIRST ever photography group that will be allowed on site after dark!  This is an unique opportunity to have access to an abandoned location, legally, for low light and light painting.

The price of this meetup includes the cost of access to the site, which RRTP has arranged with the owners.

Bring your big flashlights and lets do some Light Painting!!  We will meet at 1:00pm and have 4 hours to photograph until sunset and then an additional 2 hours after sunset.  This should allow for some great photography!!

We have also arranged to photograph the W.A.Young Machine Shop on Sunday.  This will be a separate meetup and not included in the price for this meetup.

Before registering for this meetup please download and read the attached release.  A release is required for every participant.

From Wikipedia:

Carrie Furnace is a derelict former blast furnace located along the Monongahela River in the Pittsburgh area industrial town of Rankin, Pennsylvania. It had formed a part of the Homestead Steel Works. The Carrie Furnaces were built in 1884 and they operated until 1982. During its peak, the site produced 1000 to 1250 tons of iron per day. All that is left of the site are furnaces #6 and #7, which operated from 1907 - 1978,along with the hot metal bridge.

We have reserved a block of rooms for those who want to spend the night or join us at W.A Young on Sunday.

Thanks for organizing this great meetup! I had a lot of fun taking photos and meeting the group members. I only wish I had had more time to take pics. The light photography was fun.

Thanks Road Runners for organizing this amazing event. Carrie is an amazing venue to photograph, but the best part of the event, of course, was being in the company of such fabulous photographers.

I am driving up Friday evening and returning Saturday night. Anyone need a ride?

I am driving up Friday night. Are we able to take exterior pictures of the site in the morning before our tour starts? Or can we arrive early to shoot from the parking area?

Anything else in the area worth expoloring in the morning?

Any chance we can do some steel wool light painting at this site?

    September 30, 2013

    • Don

I think so, we can ask when we get there.

My equipment is far from the the latest and greatest. Will a Nikon D50 with a 50 mm prime lens and a sturdy tripod have sufficient ISO sensitivity to do this kind of low light photography?

    September 4, 2013

    • Denise

I believe so, but will let the Nikon user answer tomorrow. With a sturdy tripod you should be fine in my opinion.

Hi Rebecca, I think you would be fine with a D50 and the prime lens should work well in low light. You might want to consider using a remote shutter release to prevent camera shake on any slow shutter speed shots.

This sounds cool. Will RSVPs open up again or is this event full?

    September 4, 2013

    • Don

Hi Rebecca, I'm opening the RSVP tonight.
