RoboParade 2013 at the Science Museum

10:30am-1:00pm: Build-a-Parade-Robot Workshop & Exhibits, in Science Museum's Classroom "B".

2:00pm–3:00pm: RoboParade, in the Atrium of Center in the Square

The autonomous RoboParade, is back for its 3rd year! ... Robots autonomously following a black line on white tables + following each other without crashing into each other = Fun!!! :-D

The most up to date details, & registration info, are posted at:

Videos from previous RoboParades at the Science Museum of Western Virginia:

The RoboParade is a fun event where autonomous (pre-programmed) robots are built & programmed by participants, and then all the robots drive around a large set of tables, following a line on the tables!

The robots should be autonomous, be able to follow a black line on white paper (using a light sensor), and have a means of stopping without crashing into the robot ahead of them in the parade (using a touch sensor or other means of detecting obstacles, such as an ultrasonic or infrared proximity sensor).

Info & videos from the home of the RoboParade:, part of

Workshop: If you have No Robot & No Experience, you should attend the Workshop, and build a robot for the Robo-Parade! ... Six Lego NXT robot kits will be available to borrow & use during the RoboParade, thanks to Henry!

Everyone with a robot which completes a few laps wins a "Science Museum of Western Virginia RBTC Robotics Parade" medal. :-D

Thanks to Henry, for organizing this event!

Western VA Science Museum are wonderful hosts, STEM council organized a marvelous event. Cool arachnid demo-bots by Dave Livingston, and FIRST bots from Tuxedo Pandas and others. Here is a parade video recorded by a camera on a robot

Awesome event! We had the best turnout yet! Thanks to Henry & Lisa, the SMWV staff, and to everyone who volunteered to put on this event! PS - Henry shared a link to the 21 second WDBJ Channel 7 news video about the event:

What a terrific event! We had some difficulty with the crowded space, particularly securing a spot along the parade route, but Ben handled it very well, considering his aversion to crowds and noise. Thanks for a wonderful time!

The parade theme this year is butterfly. Try some colorful decorations for your Bot and maybe your bot will be one seen on TV.

I uploaded three example Lego NXT Parade Robot programs, in the Files section of this web site.

I recommend trying these programs in this order:
      1. Easiest: Parade2Bumper.rbt
      2. Next: Parade2Sonic.rbt
      3. Next: Parade2SB.rbt
      4. Advanced: ParadeProSB.rbt

Did anyone see that the Tuxedo Pandas won the VA State STEM robotics competition this year ? I saw it on Channel 7 (or was that Channel 10 ?) Hope they continue the winning streak and make it to Roanoke in June, with something cool for the Robot Parade.

It was Channel 10, doing a followup story to our state championship win.
