"You go all the way around Robin Hood's barn just to come in the back door". You might ask, what the heck does that mean. It was my grandfather's way of saying, why did you spend all that time and energy when you could have simply walked in the front door to begin with. Obviously, he was not talking about barns, buildings or back doors but was referring to the fact that sometimes there's an easier, simpler and faster way of doing things. Acting students can spend years learning the "tools of the trade" (character breakdown & development, scene study, emotional memory recall, etc, etc.) and while all these techniques can be useful, it can be a long, tedious and quite frankly sometimes boring process. Did you ever stop and think "why children are such natural actors"? Also, just because someone has a lot of fancy and expensive tools doesn't necessarily make them a good carpenter.
In my 15 years as an acting instructor I have developed my own method based on my grandfather's "words of wisdom". Perhaps the best way to sum it up is "My Students Get Work".
