Vampire-O

ROC invites you to our first Vampire-O...a spooky evening of orienteering with a ghoulish twist. This is a mass start event, with everyone heading out at 7pm with flashlights in hand. This event calls for the use of punch cards instead of electronic punching.

Some vexing vampires will be out on the course with special flashlights and blank punch cards. If you are the victim of their beastly beam you must trade your punch card for the blank card. You also get the special flashlight and get to search for "fresh blood" and a new punch card. Will you get back to the creepy castle safely? Perhaps you will find the garlic that grants you immunity? Or will you go to the grave before you return to safety?

The registration and fun will start at 6:15 with a costume contest and fun activities. This is a perfect family activity. Pre-registration is now open at roc.us.orienteering.org.

If you are interested in helping with the activities and games prior to the Vampire-O please send an email through this site.

Bring your costume and your flashlight!

I assume headlamps are OK too or does it has to be a flashlight? I probably need to upgrade my headlight anyway. Does anybody have a recomendation?

Yes, headlamps are fine. People like to only use their lights when they need them because they don't want to be visible to the vampires. So you will want to have easy access to turning it off. I think I got mine at LL Bean.

A headlamp would be ok, but it would probably get in the way when you wanted to be very stealthy. Lots of light is not a good thing.

I've used one when we were absolutely confident there were no threats around. (once rather successfully, once not so well...)

So yes - go ahead and bring it, but do be sure to have a hand held available.
