Windows 8 Game Development JumpStart

Thinking about creating games, or already started and interested in learning about the new Windows 8 and Windows Store opportunity?  Then join us for this Windows 8 Game Development JumpStart!

This JumpStart is a free, full day of instruction, with sessions that guide you from introductory to intermediate topics as the day unfolds.  Throughout the day, we'll show you around Windows 8 development with a focus on game development, which is one of the largest areas of opportunity for app developers.

We'll cover core Windows 8 concepts and features for your games, game development concepts, and guidance on building and deploying your games.  The day will also include looks at various cross-platform tools and frameworks for app and game development that can help you get started quickly or bring games to Windows 8 from other platforms.

  • 9:00 – Welcome to the JumpStart
  • 9:15 – Windows 8 Platform & Features
  • 10:30 – Break: Plan to unlock achievements
  • 10:45 – Developing Apps for Windows 8
  • 12:00 – Lunch:  Refuel & Power Up
  • 12:45 – Game Development Options for Windows 8
  • 2:00 – Break:  Prepare your laser focus
  • 2:15 – Game Development Tools & Frameworks
  • 3:30 – Conclusion: Wrap up and proceed to the next level

Who Should Attend

No specific experience is necessary, and we encourage developers familiar with creating apps for other platforms to join in and learn about cross-platform options for bringing games to Windows 8.

Whether you're new to Windows 8, game development, or both, you'll leave with a practical understanding of Windows 8 features and development, a head filled with new app ideas, and the knowledge you’ll need to get in the game quickly!

Finding the JumpStart

The event will be at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the Louise M. Slaughter Hall (Building 78).  Here are directions to the RIT campus.

What to Bring

There's no requirement to bring a laptop, but if you'd like to follow along, bring a laptop with Windows 8 installed along with Visual Studio 2012 for Windows 8 Express (it's free).

See you at the JumpStart!

Great job Chris. I began the morning knowing very little about gaming and left in the afternoon with a head full of knowledge and a laptop full of tools. Also thanks to Steve Maier for demo of the App Store Dash Board. He took a lot of the mystery out of tracking your apps. RIT was a nice location for this event even though it was a little out of my way. Definitely worth the trip.

I spoke with Rich at our app dev clinic yesterday and it would be a great learning opportunity.

I initially said no (the meetup email says 9pm. I saw the agenda, and realized its 9am.) but will need to reconsider. Would need to take the day off. :(
