New Meetup: Arapahoe Peak South to North Traverse

From: Jason M.
Sent on: Sunday, January 24, 2010 10:36 PM
Hello all! For those of you that don't know me I am Jason, and have been paying pretty close attention to this group in the recent months. Leonard has just recently graced me with the responsibilities of assistant organizer and I just wanted to say that I am excited to be leading hikes in the future with such a great group of people. I hope to broaden the scope of this group to more general mountaineering routes and get some exciting climbs going, and I would love your feedback on what you would like to see in the future. Without further adieu, here is my inaugural meetup.

Announcing a new Meetup for Colorado 14ers!

What: Arapahoe Peak South to North Traverse

When: Saturday, February 13,[masked]:00 AM

Boulder REI
Boulder CO
Boulder, CO 80301

The Arapahoe Peak traverse is a classic climb and a class 3 route in the summer. En route is a class 1 walk-up to the ridge, with a class 2 boulder hop to South Arapahoe's summit. The traverse is class 3 with spectacular views of the Arapahoe Glacier and the rest of the Indian Peaks. Snowfall has been light, so depending on weather this week snowshoes shouldn't be needed. I would however recommend some kind of foot traction (microspikes) or crampons if you have them and an ice axe. This route will NOT be technical, but a solid knowledge of winter mountaineering will be mandatory. Also important to note, the majority of this route will be at or above 13,000 feet, so if you have or have had problems with acclimatization to altitude in the past, then this may not be the climb for you. If you have any questions at all, feel free to drop me an email.

We will be meeting at 5:00 AM sharp at REI in Boulder. Plan for a full day in the mountains and allow yourself plenty of time to get back in the evening as we may stop in Nederland for drinks, food, and some good laughs. See you on the trail!
