ActionCable is the showstopper feature in Rails 5. With it there is now a prescribed Rails way of building realtime apps without the need for external systems or services.
Before ActionCable, most Rails developers implemented Polling, Long-Polling, or used a third party service such as Pusher to get realtime functionality. ActionCable makes implementing realtime in your app even easier than polling.
"If you can make WebSockets even less work than polling, why wouldn't you do it?" - DHH

In this talk, Jeff Nappi will walk us through implementing a chat app step-by-step with ActionCable. The talk assumes experience building apps with Rails, but no specific experience with realtime services or frameworks is expected.
Bio:Jeff Nappi is the Director of Software Engineering at ClearVoice - a Phoenix-based Content Marketing Platform and Marketplace. He has been building software and startups in Phoenix since 1999.

We meet on the third Tuesday of every month at GoDaddy in Tempe.
