Ruby on Rails InstallFest

  • Mar 20, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Do you want to learn how to program and develop web applications for Ruby on Rails and have no idea where to start? Or, are you a company that has staff that need to get up to speed on Ruby on Rails? Sponsored by reInteractive and Envato you are invited to attend the Ruby on Rails InstallFest!

What is it about?

This will be your opportunity to get your laptop or computer working with a full Ruby on Rails development environment, all setup and working. Most importantly, it's a FREE service!

We get your laptop up and running on Rails. This can take a bit of work. You are welcome to bring your Windows, Mac or Linux PC, our team can help get you running on any of these.

Once you have installed Rails, we get you building your own blog powered by Ruby on Rails, by the end of the night, you should have this up and running, online and published on the Internet :)

Then, we'll get your published blog personalised, with Javascript, CSS and headers and footers.  All the while learning more about Rails.

Free Stuff!

Not only do you get time with Ruby on Rails professionals, you also get vouchers to various training tools and sites... worth real money :)

Wait, what do I bring?

The only requirement is you bring your computer along with whatever power charger you need, and also, please, make sure your computer works :)

OK, I need one more incentive. How about free food?

We'll organise pizza and drinks for you to munch on while you are getting your system up and running. Power boards will be provided, everything else is up to you.

I'm a professional Rails Developer can I help mentor?
Yes, we are always looking for professionals to come along and help :) Just send us an email or RSVP to let us know you'd like to come along.

What have others said about the InstallFest?

“The InstallFest was a great way to get up and rolling with Ruby on Rails. Never having coded in it before, I was happily surprised to have my own blog coded and online on the first day. The instructors and and written guides, made the whole process effortless.” - Bravo Child

“Wonderful initiative for the RoR Community to get the word out...have been looking for this help for ages.” - Julian Blok

“I just got home and finished the first two lessons, thank you very much, was awesome, really interesting. I hope to keep learning and join the Development Hub.” - Agustín Gambina

“Great, easy experience. Great to have experts on hand when you get stuck, meet others, good food and vibe. Thanks!” - Kevin Truong

I was having trouble pushing the blog on Heroku. I was getting this error on issuing "git push heroku master".
    Permission denied (publickey).
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

Pat and another organizer tried to help me but we could not fix it. I found a solution on StackOverflow. Just in case anybody else had the same issue, I wanted to post the link here.
    http://stackoverflow.com/a/1511...
This may also be of help in the future sessions if anyone faces this problem.
Oh, and of course, thanks to all the organizers for the session. :-)

Great to know you got it working! (Though that link hasn't quite come through, but I think that's Meetup's fault, not yours).

Sorry about the broken URL... i didn't test it after i sent the message.

In a nutshell what the answer on StackOverflow says is Heroku needs the public SSH key with a standard name, i.e. "id_rsa.pub". So if your $HOME/.ssh folder has a public SSH key with any other name (github_rsa.pub in my case) and that is the one you uploaded on your Heroku account, then create another key using the "ssh-keygen -t rsa" command. And upload this key (with the generic name "id_rsa.pub")to your Heroku account.

Thank you very much for a really informative session. Finally have a starting point to start learning and toying around with RoR. It was quite a bit to digest in a night and definitely looking at more sessions in the future. I want to be a happy developer too :)

I think some of you may find this course useful:
    https://www.edx.org/course/uc-berkeleyx/uc-berkeleyx-cs169-1x-engineering-1377

It can be taken for free and is starting on the 18th of April. I completed it last year and found the course material to be very good.

The course begins with accelerated lessons in Ruby and later uses Ruby on Rails to teach the SaaS software delivery model and Agile software development practices.
