Getting Started With Sinatra
Details
Bring you laptops, and together we’ll be working through the recent Ruby Source (http://rubysource.com/) tutorial Just Do It: Learn Sinatra, Part One (http://rubysource.com/just-do-it-learn-sinatra-i/), Two (http://rubysource.com/just-do-it-learn-sinatra-ii/), Three (http://rubysource.com/just-do-it-learn-sinatra-iii/), and Four (http://rubysource.com/just-do-it-learn-sinatra-iv/). It will provide you with a basic introduction to building web apps with Ruby using the lightweight web framework Sinatra (http://www.sinatrarb.com). You’ll also get a taste of the Slim (http://slim-lang.com/) templating language, the DataMapper (http://datamapper.org/) ORM framework, and maybe even a bit of Sass (http://sass-lang.com/) if we get far enough.
To maximize your time the most, have Ruby setup when you arrive. Mac people, good news a suitable ruby is already installed, but you might consider a more thorough setup (http://railsonosx.com/) with the likes of Homebrew (https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew), or install one ginormous stack with Cinderella (https://github.com/atmos/cinderella). Ubuntu people take a look at Peter Coopers Rails 3 on Ubuntu 10.10 guide (http://www.rubyinside.com/how-to-install-ruby-1-9-2-and-rails-3-0-on-ubuntu-10-10-4148.html). Windows people, take a look at Rails Installer (http://railsinstaller.org/). Other Distro or OS people, with a little keyword magic in Google (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=rails+3+bsd+debian+fedora+gentoo), I am sure you can find a sufficient tutorial.
For the uninitiated, we’ll help you get things setup if you’d just feel better having someone help you through it.
Bucketworks Bucketworks usually keeps there doors locked. Buzz up and let them know you are there for the RubyMKE meetup or message @rubymke (https://twitter.com/rubymke) and someone will let you in. We will be in the meetup space just to the left after you enter.
Pizza For those who are interested, pizza will be available at the meetup. Since we don’t have a sponsor at this time, donations are appreciated.
After the Meeting We will head down to Transfer Pizza (101 W Mitchell St (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=101+Historic+W+Mitchell+St,+Milwaukee,+Milwaukee,+Wisconsin+53204,+United+States&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=61.928102,113.203125&ie=UTF8&cd=2&geocode=Fb1QkAIdwJXC-g&source=embed&hq=&hnear=101+W+Mitchell+St,+Milwaukee,+Wisconsin+53204&ll=43.017199,-87.918606&spn=0.060308,0.077248&z=14), at the intersection 1st, Mitchell and Kinnichinnic Ave) after the meetup for refreshments & conversation. Everyone is welcome, and encouraged, to join us.
