Abstract
The Formula SAE® series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop, and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competitions give teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and engineering skills in comparison to teams from other universities around the world.
The panel will start with brief team introductions and also explain the overall idea and objectives of the Formula SAE® series. The team members will share their learnings from the team sport, their ideas for future vehicle design, and perspectives as engineers and entrepreneurs in the mobility space. We are also inviting questions from the audience for a lively discussion.
Speakers info
Julia Pastis - University of California, Berkeley
Greet to meet you! My name is Julia Pastis, and I'm Team Principal of Berkeley Formula Racing (BFR). I'm a junior majoring in Data Science and Business. BFR is UC Berkeley's internal combustion FSAE team. We were founded in 2001 and first competed in 2006. Since then we're proud to have pushed the limits in creating one of the lightest cars ever at FSAE comp at 272 pounds, designed and ran our first aero package in 2015, and achieved first in fuel efficiency in 2016 and 3rd in business in 2019. Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with you!
Allegra Robertshaw - San Jose State University
"I joined the electric team at SJSU in Fall 2017 during my freshman year and was the Suspension and Vehicle Dynamics Lead, and I am the current Project Manager. I have been on the team through two competitions, our first racing electric car, and the merge with our combustion team. As an ME student I believe formula has been the most valuable contribution to my education, and I am passionate about bringing the experience to as many students as possible. "
Jason Do - San Jose State University
"My interest in cars was ultimately the thing that brought me to FSAE, but it has evolved into something much larger. As the chief engineer of the combustion car and the previous Suspension lead, I have tried to learn as much as possible about how to build the best race cars, and develop a great functioning team. Formula is the fastest paced learning environment I have ever been in, and it has done a lot to shape me into the person I am today.
I joined SJSU’s Formula team in 2019 and all I can say is wish I joined sooner. "
Joey Penniman - Moderator
Joey Penniman has been responsible for engineering sensor systems from concept through production for multiple vehicles. Formerly at electric vehicle pioneer, Tesla and currently with Nuro, inc. which manufactures road-legal autonomous delivery vehicles. For the past decade he has volunteered with SAE International and is a design judge for their Collegiate Design Series where students design and build a real vehicle and then compete with other students from around the globe. Joey has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from San Jose State University where he co-founded their Formula SAE team.
Join us for a very another insightful meetup.
