Meta-Data, Surveillance, SysAdmins and the SAGE-AU Code of Ethics

This is set as more of a discussion than a presentation. I can certainly contribute some impressions of the presentation by Thomas Drake, who had been a senior executive with the US NSA. Edward Snowden named him as one of his inspirations.

But are the Australian government's plans for meta-data yet another manifestation of the extent to which government simply doesn't understand the Internet? Or is it simply another case of trying to trade freedom for security and winding up with neither?
