December presentation: Docker (Erwin van der Koogh)

Details
Erwin van der Koogh will be giving our December presentation. (NOTE: We'll be in Maxwell's, which as some will remember involves a bit of dungeon crawling to get to. Enter the Comfort Inn foyer and look for the sign directing you down the corridor.)
The presentation comprises a sysadmin-focused overview of Docker, which is an open-source engine that automates the deployment of any application as a lightweight, portable, self-sufficient container that will run virtually anywhere. (As long as it's a Linux machine, since Docker uses the Linux Containers feature, aka LXC.)
Docker containers can encapsulate any payload, and will run consistently on and between virtually any server. The same container that a developer builds and tests on a laptop will run at scale, in production*, on VMs, bare-metal servers, OpenStack clusters, public instances, or combinations of the above.
Common use cases for Docker include:
• Automating the packaging and deployment of applications
• Creation of lightweight, private PAAS environments
• Automated testing and continuous integration/deployment
• Deploying and scaling web apps, databases and backend services
About Erwin van der Koogh.
Agile/Lean/Management consultant by day, techie by night Erwin is always looking for ways to create more fun, engaging & adaptive organisations. Part of that is people, part of it is technical. So he keeps an eye out for new technologies that stand to disrupt the status quo. Docker is a potential candidate because it has the potential to radically change the way we think about applications.
