SEA MicroServices - Round Two

Details
- UPDATE
Just updated with Vyom's latest AWS agenda.
#FOMO Alert!
Once again we've had a huge turnout for the event and it's likely to be standing room only as we have capacity for 75 for seating. If you want to get dinner and a seat please arrive early.
- LOGISTICS - Please use the door code for the building and proceed directly to the BB Offices on the 3rd floor.
I will be there at 530 to help BB team set up. Ping me on @jdsboston or 206 745 2656 to help.
- THANKS TO OUR SPEAKERS AND HOST! We're very excited to host our second Meetup this Wednesday. Thanks to another another great set of speakers from COREOS and AWS for coming out to speak with us and to IBM Bluebox for hosting. Josh, Krish and Steven
Speaker 1 - CoreOS - Josh Wood
# Summary - Josh will provide an overview of CoreOS, the CoreOS open source projects and ecosystem, and a deeper look at the latest rkt container runtime during this discussion of principles and techniques for building and managing bare-minimal containers designed around microservice interfaces, including:
- CoreOS: Running the world's containers
- What's a "bare-minimal" container? Why is it?
- Appc: A scintillating specification for app containers
- rkt, an appc implementation: Container runtime exorcism (No daemon!)
** Please don't reimplement `init`: Managing containerized microservice lifecycles
*** Case: rkt and systemd: A demo of systemd, machinectl, and systemctl management of rkt pods
** Sidelight: rkt fly: Container packaging at host-level execution (Containers unchained?)
** Sidelight: Trusted Computing: rkt and the TPM - Putting it together: Bare-minimal containers and the rkt pod: Sharing resources in a microservice architecture
** Sidelight: CNI: Container networking, srsly
# Bio - Josh Wood is responsible for documentation at CoreOS. He's not saying rkt is his favorite project, but rkt is his favorite project. When procrastinating, Josh enjoys photographing polydactyl cats and writing short autobiographies.
Speaker 2 - Amazon Web Services - Vyom Nagrani
# Summary - Vyom will talk about AWS' philosophy and recommended best practices for building microservices applications, how AWS services like Lambda and API gateway benefit developers building microservices apps, and how customers are using these two and other AWS services to deliver their microservices apps.
-
Breaking apart the monolithic application
-
From service-oriented architecture to microservices
-
What is serverless? Why serverless?
-
Introduction to AWS Lambda
-
Customer examples of building serverless microservice apps
-
Introduction to Amazon API Gateway
-
Serverless architecture patterns
-
Best practices for AWS Lambda and Amazon API Gateway
-
Sneak peek at the SquirrelBin architecture
# Bio - Vyom Nagrani is a Sr. Product Manager for AWS Lambda, a compute service that runs your code in response to events and automatically manages the compute resources for you. Lambda helps developers think about applications in a new way, by creating simple event handlers that respond to updates from Amazon S3, DynamoDB, Kinesis, SNS, and other services, as well as directly from web and mobile apps. He holds an MBA from the University of Michigan, and has previous experience across Product Management, Product Marketing, and Product Engineering.
Speaker 3 - We'll also get an update from Tyler Britten @VMTyler Technical Evangelist extraordinaire from IBM / Bluebox updating us on their latest adventures and product releases in the OpenStack and CloudFoundry worlds.
