We're fortunate to have Greg Benson (Sr software engineer on Android @ Netflix) to lead our April live code! Greg is going to present on how to incorporate reactive programming into your Android apps with RxJava. Rx provides a new way of thinking about both data and events, and can be used to improve user experience and the overall quality of your app. Greg will build RxJava into an app and explain some of problems that Rx solves well.
There are a few things that Rx does well, and will be highlighted in the coding presentation:
- Simplified concurrency and background task management
- Easier error handling
- Composing observables to manage sequences of asynchronous data
- Transforming data and events (same tool kit!)
Greg has been working on Android for over 4 years - since it was an Eclair. His current position is with Netflix where he created the UI layer for the launch of the native app. Previously he participated in the launch of the Amazon MP3 app by creating the streaming audio playback service as well as numerous UI components. Greg has also led app development for three startups and originally worked at Dolby Laboratories.
Big thanks to Yelp for hosting our meetup!
As always, bring your laptops and please contribute your questions!
