August Double Con

Lets have a two-day, three-round Diplomacy mini-con! Saturday, August 23 to Sunday, August 24th.

Edi Birsan has conjured a space in Concord at the Todos Santos /Pacheco Plaza on Salvio between Grant and Mt. Diablo; walking distance from the BART Downtown Concord station.

We will be playing outside around the fountain and in the alcoves.

Adjacent to the plaza is an Italian restaurant and the Hop Grenade which is a micro-brew Beer joint plus tons of restaurants in walking distance.

Your Tournament Director will be Andy Hull.

Saturday: Registration 10:00am

Round 1: Saturday 10:30am - 4:30pm (6 hours)

•Board call at 10:15am

•Scoring: C-Diplo-100 (1907)*

Round 2: Saturday 5:00pm - 11:00pm (6 hours)

• Board call at 4:45pm

• Scoring: DixieCon

Round 3: Sunday 9:00am - 3:00pm (6 hours)

• Board Call at 8:45am

• Scoring: Whipping 2006

* The game will run no longer than the fall turn of 1907

Overall tournament scouring will use the Conquest Sum of Ranking system (best two of three games).

"[all three rounds are] scored using a different world class scoring system.
The players are then ranked in the Round based on their results in that system.
The best two rankings are then taken for each player and the results made into a master ranking to see who won."

Given that each round is going to be relatively short, each board will run it's own clock and we will use drop-dead timing. This is where there is no additional time for order-writing; all orders must be submitted prior to the end of the negotiation deadline.

As is the ancient and noble way of our people, we're asking for volunteers willing and able to host any players traveling from outside the area and cart their sorry hides to and from the event.

New players are very welcome and encouraged to play one, two or three rounds as they like. We hope you'll have enough fun to play all three!

I really enjoyed event this past weekend. It was a real blast to catch up some old friends and meet some new ones. The time spent around the Diplomacy boards was outstanding, as was the time spent hanging out with everyone afterwards. A huge thanks to Edi and Andy for organizing what I hope will be an annual event. It seems like the Bay Area Diplomacy hobby is on its way to a fresh and exciting new start, and I hope this weekend serves as something to build on.

I had a blast its been too long between games for me. My last 2 were Pacifica and SF house games. I have trouble making Sunday events but can make an occasional weekend tourney. Thanks to Andy,Edi for the great event.

    Congrats Adam.

Great to see people. Though many congratulated me on great results and good play. I had lots of luck too. I think one thing I was doing different this time helped make the difference in my results. (Aside from Condi not being around) . I decided to finally decided to not worry about the consequences of doing the right thing for "me". (Determining what is the right thing is another question) All in all a great time.

It was a good starter event and proved out that the venue works well if not awesome as it was described. Plenty of parking near by, BART and just about anything you could want relative to food and beverages.

People had a good time and the Prize-Sur'prize instant prizes on unexpected things worked out well. Thanks to Adam Silverman who won and came up from San Diego and his brother who flew in from Minnesota and the rest of the group that had a good time and made it fun for others as well.

We will do this again next August.

Thanks everyone for coming, especially those who traveled far. A huge thanks to Edi Birsan for arranging for the gorgeous space for this event. Also thanks for putting up with my first attempt at running a Tournament. Also congratulations to Adam Silverman for winning the well-deserved title of Double Con Artist!

I'll publish the results sometime tomorrow.

Hey everyone! It was awesome to see you all and play some great games. In an unexpected turn of events I failed to get myself eliminated in any of the 3 rounds I played AND failed to uphold my existing title as the solo whisperer. Thanks to everyone for coming out! Especially those who travelled from afar. Thanks also to Edi for finding us such an awesome venue in his city and pointing us to food and other amenities.

And finally, many thanks to Andy for running the event. I certainly didn't want to wrangle these crazy folks... :)

Thanks everyone for both awesome rounds, unfortunately I can't come on day two. thanks again to Edi and Andy for hosting and GM. I hope to play again soon, amd hopefully have a better showing.

Big thanks to Adam Silverman for supplying Whipping rules as a baseline for this.

Does anybody have a spare set with wooden blocks (or at least just some more wooden blocks)? It's not impossible we could have three boards for this tournament!

    August 20, 2014

    • Alex A.

      Yeah, I'll bring one.

      August 20, 2014

    • Andy H.

      Awesome!

      August 22, 2014

  • Edi B.

I will bring wooden block sets.

Remember the location is on Salvio Street between Grant and Mt. Diablo and that the plaza opens up between the Ravioli's Restaurant and the Hop Grenade beer site. EJ Faires is on the corner of Grant and Salvio.

Hey everyone, please try to register by 10:00am on Saturday to make the first board call at 10:15am easier on me. Much appreciated!

It should be noted that literally next door to us across the street is the Latin Cultural Festival on Saturday starting at 11AM so there should be plenty of additional stuff to watch.
Parking garages (free) are located on Salvio Street one block south and one block north of the Pacheco Square area.

Well, the lesser known Silverman from Minnesota will also be coming. So we are "people" I guess. But seriously, I bet you can get to 21 players!

    1 · August 4, 2014

  • Edi B.

Let's get 21... remember we have people coming from San Diego (yes I know it means counting Adam Silverman as a people)>

Hey this is exciting, we have 14!

  • Andy H.

Hi everyone, been super-busy but will announce the scoring systems by mid-week.

    August 4, 2014

  • Edi B.

Your Tournament Director will be Andy Hull.

    Round 1: Saturday 10:30am - 4:30pm (6 hours)

    Round 2: Saturday 5:00pm - 11:00pm (6 hours)

    Round 3: Sunday 9:00am - 3:00pm (6 hours)

    August 3, 2014

  • Edi B.

    Cost is ZERO
The Scoring system is whatever Andy Hull wants...but there will be prizes scattered throughout for things known and unknown. There will be a prize for each Best Country, and the Best of Each Round.

Tournament Rules///house rules, I will send to Andy for Approval since he is the TD and he can modify for his own kicks and chuckles. Nothing extreme.

    August 2, 2014

  • Greg H.

OK, 3 weeks away from kick off and I have some questions:

    1) what is the cost of attending the Con-Con?
    2) has the scoring system been settled?
    3) any other tourney rules going to be published?

    August 2, 2014

  • Siobhan N

Are there still any travelers who need help with travel? I can, if need be, though it's not super close for me. So I will put myself in as a last option for that.

    July 17, 2014

  • Glenn E.

Thanks for the clarifications. I'm RSVPing "Yes" and will attend as many rounds as my family permits :).

Also a plug: I'm hosting a game ("July Diplomacy" in upcoming meetups) a week from sunday (the 27th). We are 2 players short of a full board at the moment, so if anyone wants a last-minute warmup before the tournament... please come! :) I can arrange transport to/from Diridon station if that helps.

The game itself is the same but often there is a little change in how people play so that they can maximize their result within whatever scoring system is used. Tournaments are A LOT of fun and I highly recommend playing in them whenever possible :)

      July 13, 2014

  • Glenn E.

I've never done a dip tournament before. I'd like to, but we also have family visiting from out of state that week so not sure I can do all 3 rounds. What's the etiquette on attending only part of a tournament? And how does a tournament function if there are not multiples-of-seven participants for every round?

    July 13, 2014

    • Adam S.

At most tournaments you are welcome to play one round or all rounds as is convenient. If there is a non multiple of 7, the tournament director will make a call - sometimes the TD will play in the round, possibly on two boards, sometimes one or two pre-designated assistants will be asked to sit out.

no problem... attend one round or all three. We have prizes for each round and an multi round play as well as "Prize Sur'prize" for fun things (for some people) within a game.

  • Adam S.

Looking forward to catch up with my Diplomacy friends in the Bay Area. As an added bonus, my brother will be flying in from Minnesota to play his first Diplomacy in about 8 years. Go easy on him (actually, nah, don't bother).

    June 24, 2014

Thanks Greg, I'm probably going to rent a car, but I'll let you know if there is any change.

Edi, I guess you don't care for "Short Con" then? I didn't get "Double Con" until I saw "Con-Con". I guess that means I think "Con-Con" is better (if silly, and we will end up saying "Double Con" anyway which is probably fine).

      June 24, 2014

  • Andy H.

How about The Concord Short Con?

    June 16, 2014

    • Greg H.

I think it fits the 3 individually scored rounds. But is it PC enough for our politically connected members?

      June 17, 2014

    • Greg H.

This name idea has really grown on me. I think you should make the change.

      June 22, 2014

TD is beyond my pay grade, but I could probably pick up any travelers arriving Saturday morning from any Bay Area airport. I'll be driving up from the peninsula.

And yes, this "event" really needs a name pronto.

    June 16, 2014

    • Greg H.

Sorry I don't have a roof to offer. I will be looking to couch surf with friends near to the event myself.

      June 21, 2014

    • Edi B.

I have made some suggestions to Andy who has taken over as the TD, but it really is his call as TD. I just want it to be fair and attractive to people who play just one round as well as the hard core who will play all three rounds.

      June 21, 2014

  • Greg H.

Is it official that the 3 scoring systems for the 3 rounds are C-Dip, DixieCon, & Sum of Squares

    June 21, 2014

Not a big fan of Drop Dead for new players. Also the area is big and may not be conducive to single time coordination. Two minutes for order writing may be good.
