The rise of public clouds was made possible by the maturation of virtualization technology. For a while, we seemed to be satisfied with setting up virtual hosts to meet our needs. But it was a fair amount of work (now often mitigated by various tools), and virtualization does have some overhead.
Recently, there's been a lot of activity around lightweight containers, particularly Docker. These are easier to set up than full hosts, smaller, and impose less overhead. There are also multiple alternatives such as LXC, ZeroVM, and OpenVZ.
For our February event, I'd like to hear about applications of lightweight containers. Are you using them? Which flavor are you using? What do you use them for? How do you build and deploy your containers? Can you compare then with using VMs and demonstrate the benefits you're getting? Existing management tools are built around managing VMs, so how are you managing your containers? Do you have experience with more than one of the available container technologies, and could you compare them for us? I'm looking for[masked] minute talks. If you can give a talk, please contact me, Chris Westin, through meetup.
As well as the evening's theme talks, we can fit in 2-3 five minute lightning talks at the beginning of the evening; any topic that would be interesting to the #lspe audience is welcome. If you're interested in giving a lightning talk, contact me, Chris Westin, through meetup.
