Photographing California; two books, two approaches.

Join professional landscape and travel photographer, Gary Crabbe, as he discusses the production of his two latest books, Greetings from California, and Photographing California, Vol. 1 – North. Each book was produced by two different publishers for a completely different set of readers. Gary will outline and highlight his thought processes and choices regarding the different editorial and commercial considerations each project required, and how those played into the role of researching subjects, locations, ideal shooting conditions, and editing images to eventually be included in the books. If you ever wanted to know some of the realities behind the making a book project long before it reaches the press, this will be a great presentation to attend. Afterwards, Gary will be happy to answer questions about images, gear, processing techniques, or the publication processes.

About Gary Crabbe:

Gary Crabbe is a multi-award winning photographer and author with seven published books about California to his credit, including The California Coast, Backroads of the California Wine Country, and his latest, Photographing California; Vol. 1 – North, which won the 2013 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal Award as the Best Regional Book. Gary’s photography has been used by the National Geographic Society, TIME, Forbes, L.L. Bean, Sunset, Victoria’s Secret, and is represented by a number of global stock agencies. In addition to his own photography, and after starting his career in the photo industry by running a niche stock agency for an internationally-renowned photographer, Gary continues to also occasionally find work as a freelance Photo Editor, including spending several years working as a Portfolio Reviewer at the annual NANPA conferences. Gary has given presentations and workshops for places REI and the Sierra Club, as well as having been a keynote speaker and presenter for the Photographic Society of America.
