Innovations in Energy Data Analytics [On-Line event]

Data Analytics applications are enabling electric utilities and their customers ever-growing applications for new benefits via operational optimizations and reduced costs. These new data sources are supplementing more traditional data sources including Billing Data, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Energy Management, Distribution Management, Work Order Management Systems, Outage Management Systems, and Customer Information Systems (CIS). Simultaneously, utilities need to integrate relevant unstructured data sources from email and social media. As relative newcomers to advanced analytics, electric (as well as gas and water) utilities are challenged to deal with the volume, velocity, and variability of data that can help them deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective services.

This unique evening event will feature thought- and action-leaders sharing their expertise on advanced smart grid data analytics. We’ll ask them to identify the current challenges, and their takes on best data management practices for upgrading the smart grid to the 21st Century clean energy grid.

Rajeev Singh, Chief Software Architect, AutoGrid (http://www.auto-grid.com/)
Rajeev Singh is the Chief Software Architect at AutoGrid, Inc., where he brings his extensive experience building large-scale, complex software systems. Prior to AutoGrid, Rajeev was at iMANY Inc., a leader in the enterprise contract management software space, conceptualizing and building iMANY’s “next-gen” application platform in a Skunkworks-like environment (starting literally in a garage off Woodside Road in Redwood City, California). Over the years, Rajeev helped set up iMANY’s Silicon Valley presence, which resulted in the eventual relocation of iMANY’s global R&D headquarters to Silicon Valley. Companies like GE Aviation, Honeywell, TIBCO, Kodak, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Genentech now run iMANY’s enterprise applications on the “next-gen” platform. Rajeev also introduced iMANY to cloud computing, “Big Data” processing using Hadoop, Ruby-on-Rails and conceptualized and led the company’s SaaS architecture. Prior to iMANY, Rajeev built decision-support and price- and revenue-optimization enterprise systems at Decision Focus (renamed Talus and later acquired by Manugistics). The systems Rajeev built were used by such companies as Ford Motor Co., Continental and Northwest airlines. One of these — a marketing incentive optimization system — was chronicled in Forbes and Business Week magazines. Rajeev has an M.S. in Engineering Mechanics from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.

Ann Moore, Director, Industry and Market Principals, OSIsoft (http://www.osisoft.com/)

Prior to joining OSIsoft, Ann worked for San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E – Sempra Energy) for 17 years. At SDG&E, Ann was in charge of real-time control Energy Management System (EMS). In this capacity, she also managed the grid operations related projects, including implementing OSIsoft PI System for Transmission and Distribution Operations, and Substation Automation integration, etc. Ann was the power & utilities T&D (Transmission & Distribution) Industry Principal at OSIsoft, and worked directly with the utility companies globally in strategic initiatives to build a real-time and event enterprise data management infrastructure to benefit the operations, engineering, planning, asset management and maintenance, AMI and Smart Grid, etc. Until recently, Ann has taken a new role as Director, Industry and Market Principals. Ann leads a team that is responsible for OSIsoft core vertical industry and emerging horizontal market business development.

John Brett, Vice President Marketing, Preclarity (http://www.preclarity.com/)

Utilities at PreClarity, a leading provider of business intelligence and analytics solutions for enhancing operations and customer engagement at telecommunications providers, cable operators and utilities. Over 25 years, John has held leadership roles in organizations that operated, developed and marketed automation solutions for demanding applications including utility operations, industrial automation, and navy command & control. John was an early principal at Tantalus, where he established and built the vision for a real-time, two-way communications network to automate distribution utilities all the way to consumers; a model that is now standard for Smart Grid implementations. John now leads PreClarity’s product and business development strategy for delivering Smart Grid intelligence for advanced utility operations. John received his electrical engineering degree from the Royal Military College of Canada, and is a registered Professional Engineer.

Eric L. Miller, Founder and CEO, SCVsoft (http://www.scvsoft.com)

Eric Miller is founder and CEO of SCVSoft, a software development firm focusing on mobile, back end, and analytics for energy, Internet of Things, and medical devices. He has held a number of senior management positions with leading companies including Trilliant, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Itron, Silicon Energy, Foresight Energy (founder and CEO), Kenetech, and AES.

Mr. Miller has testified a number of times before the U.S. Congress, California Legislature, and Public Utility Commissions Nationwide. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from Colorado College and a Master in Engineering from Dartmouth College, Thayer School of Engineering.

Christine Hertzog, Managing Director, Smart Grid Library (moderator)

Christine Hertzog is a consultant, author, and a professional explainer focused on Smart Grid technologies and solutions. She has two decades of experience helping companies that range from small start-ups to multi-national corporations deliver competitive and cost-effective solutions and services to customers.

Christine is the author of the Smart Grid Dictionary, the first dictionary that explains the jargon, acronyms, and terminology used by utilities, regulators, standards organizations, and manufacturers; and the author of the Smart Grid Dictionary Plus, which includes the Dictionary and training materials.
She is co-author of The Smart Grid Consumer Focus Strategy: Transforming Utility Operations to Build Consumer Value, which describes a methodology for utilities to transform operations to deliver consumer-centric communications and engagement.

Her most recent publication is the bilingual Chinese/English edition of the Smart Grid Dictionary.
