The first ever Prometheus monitoring meetup in SF! HUGE thanks to Pinterest for hosting us and Josh Enders for making this happen.

Agenda

6:30pm - 7:00pm - Arrival | food + drinks | networking

7:00pm - 7:10pm - Introduction

7:10pm - 7:40pm - Tom Wilkie - Project Frankenstein: A multitenant, horizontally scalable Prometheus as a Service

In this talk we'll present a prototype solution for multitenant, horizontally scalable Prometheus as a Service, code name "Project Frankenstein".

Frankenstein turns Prometheus architectural assumptions on their head, by marrying the PromQL query engine with a storage layer based on DynamoDB and S3. We have disaggregated the Prometheus binary into a microservices-style architecture, with separate services for distribution, ingest, alerting rules and storage. By designing all these services as fungible replicas, this solution can be scaled out with ease and failure of any individual replica can be dealt with gracefully.

This multitenant, scale-out Prometheus service forms a core component of Weave Cloud, a hosted management, monitoring and visualisation platform for cloud native applications. This platform is built from 100% open source components, and we're working with the Prometheus community to contribute all the changes we've made back to Prometheus. Project Frankenstein is open source and can be found at https://github.com/tomwilkie/frankenstein

7:40pm - 7:50pm - Intermission

7:50pm - 8:20pm -Joe Bowers - Monitoring a Kubernetes cluster with Prometheus

Kubernetes is a system for abstracting away the details of a cluster of computers, the heir of Google's Borg system. Prometheus, heir of Google's Borgmon, ships with native support for Kubernetes, and its next-generation approach to monitoring is a natural fit for Kubernetes' next-generation approach to running services.

This talk will explore monitoring a Kubernetes cluster with Prometheus - what you need to keep your eye on, and what Prometheus provides you with out of the box. It will share how these concepts can apply to all types of software development.
