Paul Phillips: Better Scala Collections

  • Jan 14, 2014 · 6:00 PM

Paul Phillips is a co-founder of Typesafe and the most prolific committer to Scala. His talk is about creating a better collections library for Scala.

"Based on my extensive experience with scala collections, I'm writing my own. The focus is much tighter: immutable, performant, predictable, correct. The talk will alternate between why the scala collections manage none of those things, and how I hope to do better."

Agenda:

6:00PM -- doors open

6:30PM -- talk begins

... 10:30PM -- Paul flies back to the Northern Shores, so we want to make sure we have enough time for questions and discussion, hence the talk will start promptly on time!  If you are arriving late please proceed to the back.

The ustream was pretty spotty. It would be great if the video would be posted somewhere.

This was an excellent talk by Paul, and I'm more knowledgeable than before about how Scala's collections library supports unexpected implicit conversions at the expense of type safety. Thanks to Paul for speaking and Kabam for hosting.

If we never came upon any troubles in life, it'd be pretty asinine and meaningless existence. Thanks for sharing your "war stories" with us Paul.

Agreed - Didn't know what to expect coming from someone new to Scala, and it's interesting to hear what are some major gotchas with the language.

Hi Paul, any chance you would share the slides in advance of the video recording? (I was not able to make it last night). Thanks!

Thanks Paul for an honest insight into the Scala world without any sugar coating. It's very refreshing (to me at least) to know all the pros and cons so we know what we are getting into and make the best informed decision. Thank you again!

It's impossible to illuminate this landscape without communicating some of the human events. I already discovered that if I say nothing about it then people will draw very incorrect conclusions about what the major issues are and why I've moved on. It's not sad, it's not happy, it's only a question of whether you want the real picture or some distant reflection of it.

This was the best Scala meetup that I have been to so far. And it's sad that there were some personal issues involved.

Paul is probably the most engaging & to-the-point presenter I've listened to. Would have been great if it didn't get personal in the end & would have loved to see more focus on the new collections

most enjoyable meetup I have been to.

Amazing insight into the guts of Scala! Good to understand the "bad" parts of any language; especially one as potentially complex as Scala.

Very good to have this discussion about making Scala a better language

I'll show Kabam security my driver's license but I'm not changing my Meetup name for them.

If someone can bring a good low-light camera to shoot some pics would be nice (I've left mine at home today...)

Kabam is excited to host the SF Scala Meetup next Tuesday. Please be sure to have your first and last name on your Linked In profile for the attendee list. We will not be requiring an NDA, but building security will be checking IDs to get in to the event.

Argh, return key == post. Because, this site isn't LinkedIn, it is MeetUp. Is my first and last name here sufficient? Or must I link this account?

      January 13, 2014

    • Michael M.

Sorry all. Make sure you have your First Name and Last Name on your MEETUP profile (not your LinkedIn profile).
