Lunch on the Potomac (Restaurant Cruise - no reading required!)

Please join us for a 3-course lunch and monument tour on the Potomac! If you've never seen Washington from the water, it's quite the experience. Whether you're a recent transplant to the area or have been near DC for decades, it's always wonderful to reconnect with the history and beauty of the capital and its monuments. It'll also be a really fun meal and a chance to enjoy a great time with your fellow book club members on a boat (Caution: Video NSFW*). Nina's Dandy departs from the Old Town Alexandria waterfront and cruises north to Georgetown and back. Guests are welcome, but please make sure you include them in your RSVP with us so we ca accurately coordinate group size.

  • We've negotiated a group rate of $43.50 (inclusive of fuel surcharge, tax, and gratuity). This is a 37% discount on the normal post-tax rate of $69. Your ticket includes a 3-course meal and a narrated tour of the monuments.
  • A cash bar will be available as well for all beverage purchases. Water will be included on our tables.
  • There may still be time to purchase last-minute tickets. You must call[masked] and (Mon-Fri 9:30-5) to purchase your tickets in order to ensure that you receive the group rate and reserve a spot on the boat. Since this is Father's Day weekend, they're expecting a lot of business, and will not be able to guarantee avaiability, so don't delay.
  • When you call, be sure to mention that you're with The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Club, and would like the discounted rate.
  • When you call in, please let them know what your preferred menu choice will be as well. Choose an entree from the menu below.
  • Paid parking ($7) is available near the waterfront at The Strand parking lot or the Central Parking Garage (115 S Union St).
  • You can also metro to King's Street Metro Station (Blue and Yellow lines) and catch the King' Street trolley to the waterfront (departs at :10, :30, and :50 past the hour).
  • Please be ON TIME. Boarding for the cruise will take place at 10:30 AM, and we will cruise from about 11am-1:30pm. As I'm sure you understand, we will not be able to hold the boat for anyone arriving late.
  • Attire for the cruise is dressy casual (no tank tops or cut-offs, please).
  • Lunch will be served on a covered restaurant deck, but you'll also be able to enjoy strolling around or sitting on the open-air observation deck.

Hope you're all as excited as I am for this Saturday's cruise. I just wanted to emphasize that boarding is at 10:30 AM, and it's *absolutely critical* not to be late, since they obviously can't hold the boat's departure from the dock.

Also, the weather should be a beautiful and sunny 80 degrees. Don't forget to bring sunglasses / hats / sunscreen so you can enjoy the observation deck!

Hi everyone, hope you're all excited about our lunch cruise next weekend. Couple things I need your help with:

@Allie Black and @Tonya: Can you please purchase your tickets ASAP (today or tomorrow)? Space is running out.

@David LaRoss, @David C, @Lisa, @Andy, @Dave Sheen, @Amy Z, @Gina: Your tickets are all set, but it looks like we still need your entree selections. Can you select from the menu above and let me know what you'd like for you and your guests by this Thursday night? I can pass your preferences on to the Dandy. You can PM me or leave a reply here.

Darn! If they change come with us! :)

I've persuaded the cruise company to extend our deadline to buy tickets to May 24, so space is still available. For all the awesome members who have already bought their tickets...if you want to add guests or persuade/cajole/coerce other members into coming along, the more the merrier!

This is going to be an awesome event! Just remember to please call in and buy your tickets at our discounted group rate in addition to RSVPing with us. Thanks!

@ Elizabeth B and JM - - More details on the Torpedo actually WAS an old/former torpedo manufacturing site (hence the clever name!), which has now been turned into an "Arts District" enclave of eclectic crafts and artisans. It is a GREAT place to wander, look, and shop!

I used to go there a lot on field trips when I was a kid, but I haven't been in ages! I'd be interested to see how the place has changed since I was there last.

Got my tickets, with an e-mail receipt (Andreea asked me if I wanted one when I did the booking by phone).

There isn't an email confirmation for phone bookings, but Andreea and I are coordinating our lists, so if there's any problem with one of our bookings, I'll know and alert you well in advance. Thanks, everyone!

Does the dress code allow for Lonely Island-mandated flippy-floppies? ;-D

Also, I couldn't help but notice that the dock is delightfully close to the Torpedo Factory! That might be a lot of fun to go visit for anyone who wants to hang out afterwards and look at art. I probably should specify for those who don't already know - the Torpedo Factory is a big art gallery with studios for a bunch of different local artists, not a place where they make torpedoes ...

Hey everyone. If you haven't yet called in to buy your ticket, please do so ASAP, no later than 4pm tomorrow. Just ask for Andreea when you call[masked], and make sure you mention the book club to get our special rate.

And for those of you that have already bought your tickets, you're awesome!

    May 9, 2013

  • Vijay

Hi everyone, just a reminder to please call in to buy your tickets this week. If you don't reach Andreea, please leave her a message and she'll return your call to get the details of your payment and menu selection. Thanks!
