December's Feast (no reading required!)

UPDATE: We are moving the date to 12/15 because of the storm and freezing rain expected on December 8. We apologize for any inconvenience, but your safety is important to us, and we'd like this to not end in tragedy. Please update your RSVP if your availability has now changed. Thank you!

Come join us for our end-of-year dinner! We take December off from book discussions, but every year since 2009, we've gotten together for a fun meal before the madness of the holidays descend upon us all. Spouses, significant others, and guests are definitely welcome. It's a great chance to celebrate all the fun times we've had at meetups throughout 2013, and to break bread with the amazing friends we've made and welcome in new members for the coming year.

This year, we'll be eating at The Majestic. a historic restaurant that recently underwent a reinvention into one of the most exciting dining spots in Old Town Alexandria, focusing on classic American cuisine, using wholesome locally-sourced meat and produce. The restaurant is also known for fresh-baked bread, amazing house-made sodas and craft cocktails. And on Sunday nights (which is why we chose this venue), they offer Nana's Dinner (served family style) for $22/person.

December's theme is 'A Christmas Dinner' featuring Roast Beef with Red Wine & Horseradish Sauce, Scalloped Potatoes, Sautéed Wild Mushrooms, Mixed Greens with Blue Cheese & Sherry Vinaigrette, and Chocolate Cream Pie for dessert.

If you have dietary restrictions, you can still order off the regular a la carte menu (a new menu will be launching in a few weeks, we'll update the link when it's available). They have some great vegetarian and vegan options. We will need to know how many are planning on Nana's Dinner vs a la carte so their kitchen can plan for a group of our size, so please indicate your preference in the RSVP questions. We'll check in again closer to the dinner to confirm your preference.

Metered parking near the restaurant is free on Sundays (but check for 2- or 3-hour limits), and there's also several surface lots and garages nearby. If you go a block or 2 north or south of King Street, you'll find plenty of free parking as well. We're eating dinner on the early side, so that the restaurant can accommodate a group as large as ours, but if we want to continue to hang out afterward, there are a number of great pubs and bars within walking distance in Old Town.

Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* This event is space-limited, but we'll work with the restaurant to increase our reservation size as needed to accommodate everyone possible, so please add yourself to the waitlist if interested.

Lastly, we ask that you please bear in mind that this is a large group reservation, and that it takes a lot of work on the part of the restaurant service staff to accommodate our needs (as well as to prepare and process individual checks). We ask that you please be polite and understanding with the restaurant, and please treat our waitstaff with respect and consideration.

*Since dinner meetups require reservations and commitments to the restaurant, and since missing one of these meetups may take a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For dinner meetups, a no-show will prohibit you from attending another dinner or limited-access meetup for 4 months after the no-show. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

That was great! I'm perversely glad about the weather last weekend because I wouldn't have been able to be there otherwise. Tasty food, great people, and Vijay's, dramatic, storytelling. See you all next year.

I really enjoyed the food and warm atmosphere this time. As always, I wish I could have sat at every table and chatted with everyone all at once:)

This was a fantastic dinner! The food was delicious, the drinks were amazing, the staff took good care of us, and as always the company was unparalleled. Thanks to everyone who came out and helped us cap off what's been such a phenomenal year for book club. We really are so thankful for all the new friends that have joined us and the old friends that have stuck with us as we continue to grow, and we can't wait for all the exciting things we have planned for 2014.

Also, thanks to Wes and all of you for my books and stocking. It was really sweet and super-useful, with Raganarok coming up in 10 weeks (no, it).

And of course, thanks to everyone who donated to Worldbuilders and made it possible for me to scandalize the waitstaff and other diners with my reading. I hope you all enjoyed it. :-)

Also to everyone who helped us manage our commitment to the restaurant by keeping your RSVP updated; it was a a big help and is much appreciated.

I have the nutcracker at the Warner Theater at 1 pm on that Sunday. I'm going to keep as a maybe in case I can make it. In any case I will be late for the event.

    December 7, 2013

    • Vijay

I'm afraid that since this is a dinner meetup and we have to guarantee our reservation, we won't be able to accommodate maybes or late-shows. We'd love to see you at one of our January events, though. Enjoy the theatre!

      Ok, you're right. Enjoy.

@Shaojun and @Andrew Lewis: In order to secure your spots, please answer the RSVP questions letting us know if you'll be ordering a la carte instead of Nana's Dinner and if you have any dietary restrictions. You can do this by updating your RSVP. If you don't do this by Thursday morning, I'm afraid we won't be able to include you for Sunday.

@All: Please remember to keep your RSVP (*including* guest count) updated and accurate. RSVPs lock (and no-show policies kick in) on Thursday morning when we commit to the restaurant. Thanks!

I saw a few really bad accidents on the road earlier and my own brakes failed multiple times. (Didn't crash, but it was definitely a by-the-grace-go-I moment.) Excellent call on postponement. See y'all next week!

Hi all... I'm afraid we can't attend as we'll be out of town. Happy holidays to all!

Bummer, can't make the new date :-( It's the right call with the weather they are calling for, though.

Can't make the rescheduled date--closing residency for grad school that week. Have fun without me.

I, unfortunately, will have to back out of this one. I am so sorry to miss it. I'm sure you all will enjoy yourselves immensely! See you all next year!

Hi everyone, I hope you're as excited as I am for Sunday's dinner. Right now the weather forecast looks like we'll have some precipitation, probably snow or freeezing rain in the morning but it should just be normal rain (and therefore driveable) by afternoon.

There will be free street parking on Sunday near the restaurant (as well as nearby covered lots), but you may have to drive around a little to find a spot, and you may have to walk a small amount in the rain.

So please pad your driving and parking time accordingly, and wear weather-appropriate shoes. Since it's a family style meal, getting everyone seated and eating together on time or soon thereafter is important!

Lastly, since we did in fact clear $1,000 for our Worldbuilders Charity Drive (within the first 24 hours no less!), I will, in fact, perform a dramatic reading of some saucy werewolf fiction. :)

In my experience with parking in old town it's very difficult to find parking on king street (and due to heavy traffic can be difficult to get out). I recommend the residential streets just a block or two directly north and south of king street. I usually aim for prince st. or Cameron st. Most of the side streets are one ways also.

Hello everyone! I'd love to come to this, but I think I'll have to limit myself to one day of fun this weekend, which is going to be when I meet you guys for the Hunger Games extravaganza on Saturday. I hope you all have a marvelous time at the feast! I can't decide whether "December's Feast" sounds more GRRM or more Dickens... perhaps a combination of the two? How would Tiny Tim fare in Westeros? Poorly, I think. Scrooge? Definitely from Lannister stock... :)

I've tried to answer the RSVP but my tablet keeps freezing up or the site won't let me answer the question and then be able to go to the next screen. I'm electing the Nana dinner.
I can try again tomorrow with my work computer to answer the RSVP questions.

Hope you're all excited for Sunday's feast! We need to guarantee our reservation with the restaurant, so please make sure your RSVPs (especially your guestcount) are updated and accurate no later than Thursday at noon, otherwise we will be charged for your no-show.

We have to order Nana's Dinner in advance for those of us getting the fixed price special dinner. A few of you have not yet answered the RSVP questions letting us know if you'll be ordering a la carte instead and if you have any dietary restrictions. Please do so by updating your RSVP and answering the RSVP questions (and NOT in the comment thread, please):
