Westerfeld is one of the most successful science fiction authors currently writing, and is one of a handful of authors reenergizing and reinventing young adult science fiction and fantasy. He's better known for his Uglies and Midnighters series, but he's also published an excellent space opera (The Succession duology) and a WWI alternate history (Leviathan series, we read the first book in June 2010 (https://www.meetup.com/bookclub-1137/events/13089852/)). Like February's Sci-Fi, this book is a science fiction take on vampirism. Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* Space is limited for this event. If it fills up, please add yourself to the waiting list if interested. We will add a morning session (if needed) a couple weeks prior to give as many people as possible a chance to attend.
From Amazon:
A year ago, Cal Thompson was a college freshman more interested in meeting girls and partying than in attending biology class. Now, after a fateful encounter with a mysterious woman named Morgan, biology has become, literally, Cal’s life.
Cal was infected by a parasite that has a truly horrifying effect on its host. Cal himself is a carrier, unchanged by the parasite, but he’s infected the girlfriends he’s had since Morgan. All three have turned into the ravening ghouls Cal calls Peeps. The rest of us know them as vampires. It’s Cal’s job to hunt them down before they can create more of their kind...
Bursting with the sharp intelligence and sly humor that are fast becoming his trademark, Scott Westerfeld’s novel is an utterly original take on an archetype of horror.
*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For book discussions, 3 no-shows in a rolling 3-month period will prohibit you from attending any other book discussion for 2 months after your last no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm the night before a discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!
