February's Sci-Fi - More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon

Please join us as we discuss More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon, winner of the 1954 International Fantasy Award (and nominated for the retro Hugo of the same year). The book is a fairly quick read, at about 192 pages.

Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* Space is limited for this event. If it fills up, please add yourself to the waiting list if interested. We will add a smaller morning session 1-2 weeks prior to give as many people as possible a chance to attend.

From Amazon:

In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched science fiction into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. There's Lone, the simpleton who can hear other people's thoughts; Janie, who moves things without touching them; and the teleporting twins, who can travel ten feet or ten miles. There's Baby, who invented an antigravity engine while still in the cradle, and Gerry, who has everything it takes to run the world except for a conscience. Separately, they are talented freaks. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution -- or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging, with suspense, pathos, and a lyricism rarely seen in science fiction.

A quantum leap in the development of science fiction as an art.”  — Washington Post

*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For book discussions, 3 no-shows in a rolling 3-month period will prohibit you from attending any other book discussion for 2 months after your last no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm two nights before a discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

This discussion reaffirmed the value of reading or rereading the classics for me and benefitting from the insights, or reading skills, of others. Excellent meeting.

I just got off the wait list, but I need to let someone else take my place. I am a little behind on the reading. I am just finishing the last book, Anathem, but I will definately see you all in March!

I decided to give up my spot since I would have to leave within about an hour from start time to attend a family event. Enjoyed the book and look forward to next month's discussion.

Hope you're all enjoying the novel. Now that we're less than a week away, please update your RSVP if your availability has changed, to avoid a no-show and to give someone on the waitlist a chance to attend. Thanks!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
