Gould Mesa to Royal Gorge exploratory

Stats:
12.5 miles round trip.
Elevation gain/loss 1600 ft.

This hike will take us to the bottom of the falls in Royal Gorge. About half of the hike will be on trail and we will pass Oakwilde picnic area. We will be following the Gabriellano trail until it leaves the Arroyo Seco where we leave the trail and continue up the Arroyo Seco. From there, we will probably be boulder hopping and wading to the pool, so we will probably get wet. Weather will decide if this is a go.

Directions to trailhead:
If you are coming from the west of La Canada, take the 210, exit on Hwy 2 north, Angeles crest hwy. If you are coming from the east of La Canada, take the 210, Exit Angeles crest hwy north, from the south, Take the 2 north past the 210 to HWY 2.
The Trailhead is at mile 26.4 on Angeles Crest Hwy, about 2 miles north of the 210.

I think we were really close. I ve been to the top of the pool, and given the nature of the stream at our turnaround, ie. boulders, bedrock and steeper, as opposed the gravelly streambed, it resembled the topography of the canyon above the pool. We should have gone for it.

I uploaded a screencap of Google Earth showing the distance we had left to go. The yellow line shows how close we were, about .45 miles from where we had to turn back. The hike in total was about 13.1 miles. I'm basing the endpoint on this map: http://authors.library.caltech.edu/25057/1/advents/maps/roygrg.htm

Since i was already perusing the same map, and since I had a GPS read at the turnaround, I made a little diagram of the royal gorge. http://daveb.decreation.com/royal-gorge-24feb2013.png Christopher Brennen says it takes 60 minutes to go from the upper end (where you leave Bear Cyn trail) to the pool; and 80 minutes to finish getting out of the gorge (where you leave the Gabrieleno Trail). The ??? on the map is based on those numbers. So we were just a few bends away...

Next time, we take a shortcut, although I think the Royal pool was just around the bend, or the next one, or maybe the next one? Im determined to complete the entire length of this canyon!

Even though we didn't make to the waterfall, I enjoyed the hike. Thank you Andrew for organizing it!

Well, I had a lot of fun! Although I'm a bit disappointed to have not attained the pool, again... Third times the charm, it seems...

I can't make it tomorrow. Sorry for canceling last minute.

We are meeting at Sports Chalet at 8:30 am. Since some of us in the group know the route ( at least until Long Canyon) We should be able to make good time up to that point. Looks like we are going to have good weather tomorrow, should be a good hike.

Question are we meeting at sport chalet or the trail head

    February 23, 2013

  • Andrew

Just a note. When I say that we will be following the Gabriellano trail for the hike, I mean we will be following what remains of it.

Mike, We found Oakwilde last time, thanks to Dave showing us the way, and we got past the Cabriellano trail coming down from Switzer, beautiful little waterfall. This time we will go all the way to the lower gorge.

What shoes do you recommend for this one? Are we planning on wading?

      February 21, 2013

Mike, last time I wore tevas, not a good choice, but we didnt make it there. This time we are going for it. I would suggest a good pair of boots that you dont mind getting wet. Im wearing boots this time, they may get wet, but we are going to the bottom of the royal pool this time.

I went up there this last Sunday. There is a bit of bushwhacking as you go up over the hill at the debris dam, but then it's wide open streambed hiking. I couldn't find Oakwilde campground, as I think it's under about 20 feet of sediment. Looking forward to continuing on up the gorge.

This hike sounds like the perfect combination of distance, elevation gain, diverse terrain and scenic. I am looking forward to meeting everyone. I am new to the meet up group scene but not to hiking.
