Pacifico Mountain

We'll visit Pacifico Mountain from Mill Creek Summit using a combination of the PCT and fire roads. This area was burned in the Station Fire (2009). The summit area is a pleasant campsite; the twin highpoints are challenging granite boulders. 12 miles, 2200' gain.

It's a fairly long drive from the Sport Chalet to Mill Creek Summit, about 45 minutes, so carpooling will be prudent.

Rain/snow cancels. I'll give a weather update later in the week.

Would have liked both these hikes this weekend, but weekends are usually hit or miss for me, wish it wasnt so.

Trip report: we started out from Mill Creek Summit, trying to intentionally ignore the status of the PCT which was signed as open to hikers. And the PCT did show many signs of recent maintenance. At around 4 miles you get to the junction w/ an old PCT segment (which intersects Pacifico Mtn Rd at the major saddle where Roundtop Road forks off). In about 2 more miles you run into Pacifico Mountain Road; a sign there indicates that the PCT segment we were just on is closed.

We eschewed the road, for the moment, and climbed directly up the ridge, on a well-worn use trail.

We used an unusually long lunch break to enjoy the many views from the bouldery summit- Pacifico has a broad, forested summit which affords many little views, but no single major panorama.

We took the road for descent, although I cheated by shortcutting in a few places (recommended).

Nice hike with a great group - thanks for attending, y'all.

Dave, I'm looking at that meet-up time of 9am and wondering what the return estimate would be back at Sport Chalet.

    March 23, 2013

    • Dave B.

5pm. This is based on the following itinerary: 9am meet; 10am start hiking; 12 miles at 2mi/hr is 6 hrs: 4pm finish hiking; Sport Chalet: 5pm.

Carpool sounds good. And I can be on time whatever preferred time. And I can chip in for gas money?

Sorry folks, my foot isn't doing so well. Enjoy yourselves.

If y'all want to skip this, I don't blame you. The mountains have been nicely dusted. I suspect the road will be open (if not we'll improvise). Hiking in the snow (up to a foot) is likely. Pacifico's snow is not easy to predict.

Weather looks great for Saturday! Prepare for snow on the trail, though. And rest breaks may be a bit chilly.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
