Gould Mesa to Royal Gorge exploratory

Stats:
12.5 miles round trip.
Elevation gain/loss 1600 ft.

This hike will take us to the bottom of the falls in Royal Gorge. About half of the hike will be on trail and we will pass Oakwilde picnic area. We will be following the Gabriellano trail until it leaves the Arroyo Seco where we leave the trail and continue up the Arroyo Seco. From there, we will probably be boulder hopping and wading to the pool, so we will probably get wet. Weather will decide if this is a go.

Directions to trailhead:
If you are coming from the west of La Canada, take the 210, exit on Hwy 2 north, Angeles crest hwy. If you are coming from the east of La Canada, take the 210, Exit Angeles crest hwy north, from the south, Take the 2 north past the 210 to HWY 2.
The Trailhead is at mile 26.4 on Angeles Crest Hwy, about 2 miles north of the 210.

also, anyone want to try this thing again soon, starting earlier? I didn't do much research for this hike, but now i have and it seems totally tractable to make a long partial loop hike from this. i thought it required rappels, but it does not, apparently. pretty cool sounding....

I will not know until you take me there. We have not reached our destination. But I will keep it a secret until you've declared it. ;o)

aha, did some exploration around the CCC ridge/dark cyn today. it looks like both the road and the direct-ridge-route are workable; i had very limited time today. I'm going to return FRIDAY: if anyone wishes to join me (this promises to be fun, and should be less than 5 hours), let me know. i'll report back.

i assume everyone's read this excellent writeup that pre-dates the downed trees, etc, but the rocks are probably about the same. http://authors.library.caltech.edu/25057/1/advents/roygrg.htm

Since I posted it as exploratory, I know the trail now even though we didnt make it to our destination, But we will do this hike again in the near future and make it to our destination. Thank you Dave, for knowing the area, without you, our going would have been much slower, and thank you Dexter for finding parts of the trail we couldnt find ourselves. And thank you everyone who attended, hope to hike with you all again soon.
P.S. tO Ledy, as I said on the trail, please dont tell how to get past the Dam.

Joe Menard, you sent me an email of "good to see you" at 12:30p, but I wasn't aware you were hiking with us. Maybe next time you can join the group on a future hike.

totally fun, and both me and dex (my dog) will sleep well tonight (it wasn't many miles but many parts were like little obstacle courses).

Rosa, I doubt it, but I do plan on being out before dark. Since this is exploratory and approx. 12.5 miles, Half if the trip will involve cross country along a river.

Thank you Andrew! Can't wait to hike with you guys again!

Due to responses, Im adding 5 more spots to this hike and a waiting list. I hope everybody is keeping up with the updates though, with this many people we need to carpool due to limited parking at the trailhead, so I am also going to change the meetup time to 8:30 at Sports Chalet

    December 30, 2012

  • Pau M.

Do you have a waiting list? My friend Frank and I would love to join.

    December 30, 2012

For those going, Since parking is limited at the trailhead, I changed the meeting location to the Sports chalet down the hill. I meet you at the outdoor lot ( not the parking structure) across from the store. This should also limit confusion as to where the trailhead is. Ill send contact info before the hike.

I wish I could make this but with it being a short week at work already there is just no way. I had a blast last week coming from the upper part of the falls ...watch out for the ha ha crossings, Andrew :-D
