About the Artist

Alexis Portilla was born in Mexico City in 1965, and moved to New York City at the age of four.  He attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Columbia University where he earned a Master's of Fine Art  in 1990.

With Pratt Institute Alexis traveled to Venice, Italy to study drawing and art history.  As a docent he spoke at the American Museum of Natural History  on the art and culture of the Asmat People of Irian Jaya.  This was part of a lecture / learning series headed by the world-renowned cultural anthropologist Tobias Schneebaum.  In[masked] he served as an adjunct instructor at Columbia University teaching printmaking to graduate and postgraduate students.

Alexis Portilla currently lives and works in New York City.  He has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally.  His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
